"Mrs. Anderson will delve into the philosophy of love, using concepts that intersect with history and literature (since those are the other two subjects in this course).
She will read brief passages from historical literature, with two volunteers to act out the scenes. Max will be one of those volunteers, willingly or otherwise. The other volunteer is Caprice."
I originally wrote that as a summary for the Philosophy lecture.
The intention was for Max and Caprice to act out a scene as Mrs Anderson reads the passage. If Max were the unwilling volunteer, the extent of the scene they act out together would be dialed back.
This scene is in production, and while working on it, I've decided to change how it plays out.
As mentioned before, the overall story for the game is planned out. While I know which story beats a scene needs to hit, I leave the details of that scene until the scene is worked on. This approach allows me to keep the overall vision intact while allowing some flexibility along the way.
Sometimes, the environment in which the scene is set doesn't accommodate an idea, or doing so could make the scene longer than appropriate.
The opening scene with Catherine was originally going to expand on the pirate theme, with her and Max running around together. The small size of the living room wasn't suitable, so that idea was moved to an outdoor scene at a later date.
Back to the Philosophy lecture and what's changing.
Rather than make Max an unwilling volunteer, the player will have a chance to decline to volunteer, or if Max has annoyed Caprice enough, she won't pick him as her acting partner.
In that scenario, Caprice will pick someone else to act out the scene as Mrs Anderson reads the passage.
This alternate version will also help to establish some story beats for another character in the scene whose motivations may appear to contrast with what we've seen already for that character.
This may seem cryptic, but I don't want to spoil too much.
