The third optional thing would be switching to a lightweight linux distro.
That is terrible advice. Not only is Linux not user friendly in the slightest, it is also randomly unstable, often for no reason at all and always complicated when trying to make it do Windows related things. This has been proven many times over many years, including in a recent Linus Tech Tips Youtube video series. I also experienced similar issues as they did while using a completely different distro. Even though they are making big improvements over the years, they are still playing catch-up and likely always will be.

As Louis Rossman from Youtube once said, "There's a reason why ppl say running Linux is like working a part time job."

But I do agree with the ram, especially while running Windows 11.

Sorry mods for going off topic here, but I couldn't let that slide.

no. i think they'll eventually be out of commission. either some one will buy it and liquidate it or just go out of business due lack of money.

Does the patch work for all seasons?
Yes.

To note: After applying the patch, there's a new "button" on the Main Menu, Right next to Patreon symbol. Setting it to Clones, invalidates the Patch, setting it to Family, applies it.

Peace :)

Let me strongly disagree here about the stability and usability of Linux, especially for running MyDorm or other Ren'Py games on old hardware. The Linus Tech Tips videos that you are referring to were about using Linux on a "gaming PC" for playing some games that are pushing recent hardware to its limits. This is not the case at all here. MyDorm uses Ren'Py, which can run just fine on hardware that is more than ten years old. This is very different from the gaming rigs tested by Linus Tech Tips.

I have been playing MyDorm on such an old PC without any issues, until the motherboard of that old PC died in March. That PC was 13 years old IIRC; it could barely run Windows 10 and obviously it did not qualify for Windows 11. But with Linux, it was running MyDorm perfectly: no problems with memory nor with audio or video. It was not a gaming PC with a fancy graphics card. It was just a boring desktop PC that worked well for years for me and my kids.

My advice:
  • If you can afford to buy a new gaming PC, then by all means get the latest hardware and run Windows 11 on it. This will allow you to play the latest games that are optimized for Windows. And it will also run MyDorm comfortably.
  • If you have an old PC with Windows and you can still buy some DIMMs for that old hardware, then try upgrading that RAM first. You will not be able to run the latest games, but more RAM will make it easier to run MyDorm.
  • If you have an old PC and you do not want to invest in upgrading any part of that old hardware, then running Linux on it may give it a second life. Modern Linux distros are surprisingly easy to install on old hardware: the graphical installer guides you through a few steps and asks if you want to keep anything from your old Windows installation, and then a few minutes later you are ready to go. Open a browser, download the latest version of MyDorm, click to extract it, then run ./MyDorm.sh and the game will probably be much smoother than under Windows.
I would not recommend switching from Windows to Linux if you can upgrade your hardware and if you intend to run other games or applications that could benefit from a more modern hardware. But if you have to use an old PC and you want to give it a second life, then switching to Linux could be a very good option, especially if you are using it mostly for Ren'Py games such as MyDorm.

If you learn anything today, let it be this:

Linux is not a commercial product. It can't be bought or sold. It will NOT go out of business, because in spite of parts of it is used in business applications, no one owns it.

I know that you are a very limited person, but, there are a LOT of persons that have higher interests in life besides money. A serious LOT of those are found in the Free Software world from where Linux comes from.

I, minuscule as I am, have given over 1 year of work to Linux. All of it in Translations. For free. I would have given more, but, for health reasons had to stop.

I am aware that a concept like this is too strange for people like you. Linux is EXTREMELY good on the smallest machines (from nano computers to microcomputers like the Raspberry), and on the larger ones (90% of all the Super Computers run Linux).

The middle range, from PC's to Consoles, they run Windows or some form of proprietary software, mostly because they are applications oriented, like the gaming machines. One thing is certain, anyone that tries a gaming computer running Linux correctly configured, will only return to Windows to play the games that are ONLY optimized for Windows.

I urge you Sherengroth to stay very far away from Linux. You aren't, clearly, capable to use it.

Peace :(
