I suspect he wasn't such a big name on this side of the pond.
My "kids" weren't exactly small at the time. But, we still watch GOOD movies together. Both at home and in Cinemas. Sometimes we even wear matching Tees when we go see a BIG franchise. Even now that they are almost 30, it's OUR thing.
One D movie that was especially relevant to all of us, was Hercules. I think we may have seen it together at least 15 times. To the point we all knew all the lines and all the songs, we even got a "special" version with several Audio tracks, so we could enjoy the songs in other languages. Another was Mulan. My daughter found a YT video with the main Mulan song in several languages and she memorized it all, so she would be singing it everywhere. LOL One of those times was at a Psychiatrist evaluation for her and her brothers ADHD, she was singing it in the waiting room... The doctor went nuts because she couldn't figure out what language she was singing......... it was a 32 languages one... LOOOOOOOOOOOOL.
So, yeah, we aren't "exactly" common, but we aren't all that rare after all...
Peace
