And this is what makes this MC special and involving. He can hide the truth, but not outright lie.
While a little white lie isn't much of a problem, in the right moment, for the right reason, even those can snowball and derail any type of honest connection.
Sure, never lying is a tremendous effort. It is also quite dangerous socially, especially for a society that sees white lies as lubricant. Some places in this world have a rather different approach to this. Brutal honesty and frontality sometimes even aggressively so, is a trademark of many places around the world. Where even a fake smile is read as an insult.
I know several people that are on both extremes of this. Some lie compulsively, for no reason whatsoever. Others refuse even the small social lubricant of a neutral expression.
This MC's positioning, by the hands of Trope, is rather tender. Neither is he aggressive, nor is he passive. He's simply truthful and caring. I would truly love to be seen that way by those around me. I may not always reach that level, but, I do try and have been doing an even bigger effort as I've gotten older.
So, as was said above by Jade and Nadira, it would be completely out of line for this MC to lie to Scarlett on something as obvious, that she knows it would be lying and would be interpreted has patronizing and infantilizing. Scarlett is highly intelligent, very well adjusted emotionally in spite of the horrible upbringing her mother subjected her too, if for nothing more than the most basic respect, she deserves the truth as a minimum, and as a lover she deserves it involved in care and humor. Anything less would be insulting.
So, I do think that that user read the lines with an intention and an attitude that isn't there, or, is not as in tune with how our MC goes about his interactions. There's another possibility, but I will not go there.
Peace
