Ive suggested him other platforms and ways directly on discord so he could continue the game, but for some reason he's still stuck on the patreon excuse.

I legit don't understand paying someone monthly for nothing palpable. Patreon shouldn't even charge people on months where nothing substantial is posted. And at the very least you need to be really dumb to keep paying a sub instead of just canceling until a new update is posted. The only reason to pay every month is if updates are at the very least monthly.

My current assumption is that most patreons subscribe once and then forget about it, because a few bucks in the single digits isn't that much of a deal if you earn four digits.

Probably, yes. And that's why we have situations where games are just abandoned. I'm willing to bet games like MGI wouldn't have ended the way they did if instead of ending up with a ton of money for little to no effort, the profits would have tapered off after reaching a certain level, slowed down if the author didn't post anything for a month.

I didn't pay a cent, so I can't complain as much as someone who actually invested hoping for a good game, but I think these are examples where "why do you care what others do with their money" doesn't float. Because some people just don't care and pay the devs for nothing, more people get robbed of a potentially good game. Everyone except the devs, or arguably even the dev, loses.

Originaly it was likely a good idea to give underpaid artists more way opportunities. If 1000 people donate one measily dollar, there is already a solid income that doesn't hurt any of the donaters. But that got exploited immediatly. Other aspects are instant gratification and consumer mentality of more and more less productive and less independent people, who don't save money and don't keep book. Donating on Patreon or live on twitch tricks them into feeling powerful, since they contribute to their "friends" when its entirely onesided parasocial. I see some parallels with simp culture (believing payment will give positive results), though it also includes non horny people who mindlessly donate money on let's players or (nonporn) streamers beyond the occasional small tip.

I didn't ever blamed a developer for that: They see a crowd willing to be exploited, so they do it. At fault are the customers who allow this and are willing to play along.

In short: The standards went down. Please, get higher standards.
