(I was going to quote-post this as a response about the conversation that needs to be had, but it would be unfair to throw this wall of text at the other person!)
We don't know how Chapter 3 is going to play out yet, whether it will continue looking forward like the first two instalments, or if it will go back and show us some of what Hutch was doing during Chapters 1 and 2. What we do know though, is that at some point (presumably the start, but I guess that depends on the answer to my first sentence), Vivian has something she needs to tell Hutch, and it can't be done via text.
There are a couple of reasons for that last bit - one, saying it needs to be face-to-face is an excuse (not that she needs one) to avoid staying the night like Christian asked her to. But two, quite simply, it's probably going to be a lot, in terms of words and probably emotions, and it wouldn't be fair or practical to do it via text message.
Some people have suggested that Vivian is going to tell Hutch that she is Christian's now, and that will be the end of the marriage. Other than knowing that Hutch and Vivian are at the very least "visually" still together in previews for Chapter 3, I don't think this is the conversation she is planning to have.
I could be well off base, but I think Vivian is going to tell Hutch pretty much everything, in an attempt to get everything in the open, ripping off band-aids so they can begin the healing process. He said in Chapter 1 that he doesn't want the details, but I'm not talking about the intricacies of how many times and in what positions she has fucked Christian, etc. I'm talking history. I think the talk with Sunshine has resonated with Vivian, and in particular the bit about being honest with each other:
Code:
Vivian: "Do you think this kind of thing could work with me and my husband?"
Sunshine: "I, uh... I don't know. You're fighting an uphill battle from the start."
Sunshine: "You and your husband jumped in without knowing how deep the water was. You're both in danger of drowning now."
Sunshine: "If you want to try and make it work, the first step is to have a complete and open discussion. He can't close his eyes and ignore it."
Sunshine: "You both need to talk about your feelings, your fears, your expectations."
Sunshine: "A set of rules needs to be established and once it is, it MUST be followed no matter what. Without trust, it's doomed to fail."
Vivian: "I don't know if Hutch is ready for that conversation. I don't know if I am."
Sunshine: "He needs to have a say in things. He needs to some level of control."
Now the above is specifically in response to Vivian asking Sunshine about their swinging lifestyle, so that's not exactly what she's looking at with Hutch (we presume), but the answer is still applicable to their situation. I think by the end of the episode Vivian
is ready to have that conversation, or at least as ready as she will ever be.
I think she'll maybe tell him the story about the older French guy and how she had more experience than she let him know about, and what her mother had told her, which ultimately led to Vivian hiding that part of her life from him after she "closed the chapter on it":
Code:
Vivian: "I wanted him to respect me, to believe I was a chaste woman, so I made him wait... a really long time.
And I never did certain things so he would think I was a lady. "
Vivian: "Like... I could take an entire penis in my mouth, but when I was about to do that with Hutch for the first time, I froze."
Vivian: "I envisioned him asking 'where did you learn to do that'... so I pretended I couldn't and never did again... "
Vivian: "Yeah, but I was afraid he'd lose respect for me... for doing something... unladylike."
The same with the almost sex in the toilets at that Christmas family dinner.
And I think she'll tell Hutch some truths about both of them as they are now, again taking from the conversation she had (in the bar, this time) with Sunshine:
Code:
Sunshine: "It takes an incredibly strong person to set aside jealousies and watch their partner take pleasure from another..."
Sunshine: "If you try to make him out to be the bad guy, you'll end up hating him and that WILL ruin your marriage."
Sunshine: "Everything you feel is normal. You are a woman at her sexual peak who obviously has some unfulfilled needs."
Sunshine: "~ Softly ~ It's going to be okay..."
And ultimately, I think she'll tell Hutch about her conversation with Sunshine, possibly including the reason she was out there and met her in the first place, and even possibly including how the night ended (though probably without too much, if any, detail).
She may also tell Hutch how that night at Christian's got out of control, giving us all the answer to that one, although for us it was touched upon in the conversation between Vivian and Christian at the Asian restaurant. The important part of it is not the action, but the build-up to the action, the frame of mind she was in with everything coming to a crescendo - the (heavily implied) threat of Hutch losing his job, Vivian's largely self-imposed state of sexual unfulfillment, visiting Christian and him testing her, Hutch's "safe person" versus Christian's "wild and dangerous", and how it all became a perfect storm...
