That's assuming that a leak actually does negatively impact the numbers who would have pledged in the first place, I'm sure someone more technical minded might have or be able to research the data, but the oppositional argument to that is that it brings in more patrons via this site functioning as advertising for free. Who knows?

If you want the dev to not quit then go support him, that's as much as you can do outside of marketing it yourself, most pirates won't sub to play a game, but they might sub if they end up liking it after it's been leaked.

If he's just creating this for the bag it won't last anyway, these games are more and more passion projects these days, especially with these tags, the biggest VNs on this website get leaked and have been leaked since the beginning, and they managed to get a following regardless.

it should be a rule in this site that content should not be shared until a few days if not more to help the devs get money. Even more if they are small devs

I said that exact thing on another thread with a day-1 leak and had my post deleted with a shitty note saying "you need to learn how this forum works." It genuinely should be a rule for games where there's an advertised public release. I get that it would add a step in checking if there's a public release planned, but why shoot ourselves (as in "the forum") in the foot when we could be working with the devs?

Speaking of which, there are people here who certainly spend much more than the cost of this subscription in a single day of drinking, or per week, spending many times more than the cost of the game. I think this is an excuse if the person is not at least unemployed or has tight bills to avoid paying. "I'm not going to subscribe every month", so just subscribe this month and cancel. You don't need to do rhetorical juggling, you're just embarrassing yourself.

Well, still the usual. PhillyGames said himself that he struggled to find any support despite advertising for his game everywhere he would think about, including Reddit, until his first game had a thread here.

This being said, the exposure is something that shouldn't be neglected. There's near to 9 millions members, even counting the dead accounts and individual taste, it's around 1 million people that will know that your game exist. If just 0.1% of them think that it worth it, it's 1,000 patrons.
But beyond the direct supports, it's 1 million people that will potentially talk about your game in other places, when someone ask for a good game "with this and that". And this is also valuable for games that will never be featured in mainstream websites.
A value that also worth it if at term you expect to be present on Steam.

After, you'll always find devs complaining that leaking their game cost them support. But let's be honest, what they miss is the understanding that everything depend on the quality and interest of your game. Leaks will only impact you if your game doesn't worth the money you ask for it.
Then, yes, perhaps that the dev will abandon it. But it's at that moment that hypocrites will revel themselves, complaining about the abandon of a game they decided to not pledge for...
