First of all, thanks you all so much, you gave me some more things to chew on
My main concern for now is just find a way to make this scalable. My hope is to find a good balance between streamlining the game enough to be scalable, but still provide a good amount of content and customisation. I didn't look into Newlife's code but I have a vague idea the issues the dev is facing, I know first hand how it is to try to build something only to find out I doomed it because I didn't build a proper base (to the dev: just in case you're reading this, good luck partner)
And don't worry, I'm on the same page as you on the issue of too much detail and control. I also played some of those games and I thought they could be interesting, but the micro management was just too much (is it really that engaging/immersing/fun manually clicking to get up, go to the hall, go to the restroom, go to the mirror, and then tell your character to brush his/her teeth before going out?).
But first I have to tackle the first issue of scalability. First I want to try build a personal demo to prove I can do it and make sure it can be scalable. For now I'm aiming to make a straight male as a playable character, but if this goes well and if I think I can do it, I'll leave it up to the player to choose between a male or female and their sexual orientation. (but again, that's a
big if, not promising anything with this)
If I fail, I'll fall back to another idea that I have that should help me getting a better understanding on how to handle these mechanics and game design. Or hell, maybe I should start with this simpler project first... (this idea being, a text game more or less inspired by Akira points and one room runaway girl. By having just one romantic interest, maybe I could focus on the customisation aspect like personality, body, clothes, etc on a smaller scale and see what kind of problems I face, before I build a bigger sandbox game like I originally intended)
Also, I'm doing this as a hobby on my free time, so don't expect to hear anything about this in the near future. But again, thank you all! (and sorry for the wall of text and if I'm being kinda unfocused with my paragraphs, as you can see I'm still shooting around my thoughts)
