I was really enjoying the game until I got to this line. It bothered me enough to come here and ask...
So the protagonist is an egotistical asshole?...or can I choose a nobler path?

Ah yes, the part where our super seducer gigachad master manipulator machiavellian protagonist can't rizz up a normal girl without sperging out.

That line is just the MC being a doofus. It's also meant to be lampshaded by Petra being demonstrably not low in self-esteem at all, and the MC being much worse at seduction than he thought.
In other words, it's not indicative of what you get in the future. It's a sweet style romances for all routes, no manipulation involved.

Is the MC an egotistical asshole? I don't know about that. He's pretty caring and kind to his friends. He can be trashy sometimes, but I'd like to think the plot and girls rib on him in enough measure to make sure you don't take him too seriously.

Glad to hear you like it. The second one gets seriouser, but also has plenty of silly moments too. I like to think I struck a better balance there, but then again, the narrative flow there is a lot more player-decided.
As for the canon ending, there isn't one. It'll all make sense in NNSN2. You don't really need any of the ends or epilogues, since the majority take place after a timeskip. The exception is Reimu's, which introduces a new plot element that's used in NNSN2 will confuse you if you haven't got her epilogue.

Just nab her phone number in her intro scene. Selen's is one of the few where you need her phone number. The rest of her affection points should be pretty easy to lock down.

Press A. This brings up Accessibility options. You can change the size of the font, the font itself to a more readable one, and also the line spacing.

It's not the perfect solution, since if you make the text too big, it clips through the text box. But making it slightly larger and the line spacing drastically smaller seems to double the size, and works in 95% of cases for me.
