Can you not use Biomancy on yourself at all anymore?

I know you can do it if you have a Slaver with it, you can have them cast on you, not sure self-cast is possible, ran into the same when I tried it.
You need to install Sql Server Compact. Its like the worst dependency ever in any game platform. I dont recall exactly the steps but there probably a lot of posts about since nearly everyone hits it.

Thought I'd try running NH on my newer computer to see if RAGS would work any faster... but instead RAGS just doesn't want to work at all, heh.
Such a clusterfuck of an engine... I can never decide if I'm more impressed or horrified by what BG's managed to do with it

im not sure i'd call it an engine or a platform... it's a school project that got fame and the devs have no idea what they're doing.
I'd almost be impressed if a student could get that far on their own. You have no idea how bad the code is in this engine (or maybe you do). Its horrific for performance lots of linear searches of data which is why its so slow. I'm not sure why I ever spent time modifying it but sure as hell would not ever develop a game in it. Sql Server CE is the kind of decision that a junior developer at a large enterprise company using Microsoft tools would make in 2002.

Faster? Yes. Buggier? Yes. RAGS is consistently spitting error messages during "Finish day" reports. Haven't found them to be gamebreaking though. Just a lot more clicking to get through the end day report.
In place of old neat boxes around assignments and whatnot are unspecified characters instead of lines.
"Update text" refers the "Update text to HTML text" under "Tools". Otherwise you'll have no text formatting (it'll appear as [/b][/i] instead of actually making text cursive or bold) and most likely no images whatsoever.

I would like to play this game but it seems like it's too much of a pain in the the ass to get it working.

Could you elaborate? I did a little bit of modding on this game, and I don't remember encountering anti-cheat features. Haven't checked the 0.805 code yet, but I didn't see anything in the patch notes about punishing cheaters.
There are many ways to make mistakes while trying to cheat (some of which will make your character file unusable or render your savegame unplayable), but I would blame those problems mainly on RAGS (for being shitty) or poor planning by BedlamGames (i.e. trying to build a complex and ambitious game on a shitty framework). I wouldn't call it malicious.
Note: if you're trying to use Cheat Engine then the problem is not anti-cheat code. The problem is how RAGS handles its memory. Real-time manipulation isn't a reliable approach; you'll have more luck with the

of the game file. Or just edit your character file to include dozens of positive Traits, and then try to play the game "straight" afterwards. The latter approach seems to work in 0.805.
