Seems unlikely in this case as he seemed to capped out at $650-800/month before fees and tax, not exactly FU money.. burn out seems more likely imho. Not close to enough money to make it worth pushing yourself for.

Hmm, I totally assumed this game was much more successful than it was. But to be fair... You forget, it IS on Steam. So, idk maybe it is just burn out. But TBH i was venting more so about the devs that regularly pull these stunts... and theres no shortage of them.

Nah, Like most other devs of these types of games that get very popular... he simply made more than enough $$$ to no longer concern himself with finishing what he started. It is currently a plague in this genre, sadly. I personally never believe when all theses devs come with these lame sob stories, 'i was sick but now better' 'my dog died' 'I was trapped on a Somali pirate ship for two years'. Im too cynical to buy that crap.

The truth is... They will eventually be back to stringing folks along with remakes or shallow content updates when they notice their bank accounts have dipped just far enough.

Well if you release a game on steam, I think you have the moral obligation to finish the game and communicate if something is happening or not happening. It is no longer a freespirited hobby at that point but a (side)business. This is just another reason not to buy something before it is finished.

I do like to give this particular dev some credits, he did give a steamkey to his patreon supporters who supported the amount that the game cost on steam and did freeze his patreon.

Except he’s really sick or dead, he should have a clear communication and committment with the deliveries. That’s the minimum obligation that he should do when receiving donations.

People don’t donate for free. We donate for a cause and for a reason. Even with charity, we expect transparency and committment as well…

I understand. However, I assumed that from the latest release to the date he paused the subscription, he already earnt some amount, so informing users is necessary. The only exception is that he doesn't take a penny since the latest release.

I'm not saying he's a bad person. People make mistakes. It's just that he needs an explanation. I think what upsets most of us is not the about the extended deadline, but about the lack of committment and communication. He used to write a long post, explaining with all the numbers, charts, project management methodologies, and why he is delayed, but still, at the end, nothing has been delivered.

I'm happy to continue to support as long as he delivers. I can wait, but a committment is a committment. That's simple.

That is why about half of the games here end up abandoned. Pretty much every small-time game, with a small but loyal fan-base, like Nothing is Forever, never gets finished.

There are a few where the dev is really committed, and will finish it whether he makes big bucks or not, but most are doing this for the money, and sadly, except for a few dozen wildly successful games, most devs would make more doing practically anything else than game development.

Money can be an issue yes but it's not always the case, some big dev are stalling updates for months or years or straight up abandon the game. Motivation and commitment is a big factor too as it very often starts as a hobby without obligation.
