Well, if you're up for it, there's Demon's Roots and King Exit of which sadly only the first one has an official english translation.
The story and characters are so well written that most modern books, movies etc are not even close to it's greatness. It's honestly shocking how well the characters are written.

It sounds like you have the 'lite' version of the game, which requires a separate RTP (Run Time Package) installation of RPG Maker.

If you go to the following link, then download and install the RTP for the correct version that the game is made with (I think RPG Maker VX Ace), the game should then run normally for you.

I'm going to assume by those question marks there that the game is in a folder that Windows can't read. Windows doesn't like folders with weird characters. Try extracting the game somewhere else.

Yes, it is an endgame feature.

There is no quest log. Try the walkthrough, it is quite detailed if my memory serves right.

Dude I felt the same way! I went touching Grass and shit, Wondering about life , I Blasted prolly a dozen times but that was 3-4 years ago, Now it's Re Run time baby!
