A European doing work on a weekend? Isn't that like illegal or something over there?
The Americanization of European work life is now finally bleeding into hobbies. At some point, Europeans might even start questioning if 6 weeks of vacation per year in exchange for 45% of your income is still worth it.

...you know that's paid vacation, right?

You know income is lower because Europeans aren't expected to fork out thousands a year on medical expenses, right?

You know average cost of living is lower in Europe because of social welfare services... right?

One issue with the general perception in the US relates to the massive disparity between classes. Quite a few mid rank office employees get at minimum 4-6 weeks vacation, and have a max medical expense of $1000 in a year. The problem is if you go lower - you end up with people getting shit pay and benefits.

Wait, will individual developers who work overtime to develop their own projects be subject to legal restrictions?

nah, employee are protected up the wazoo in europe, but if you're the bossman and want to speed all your waking hours at work nobody will bat an eye. If you try to do that to one of your employee you'll end up in front of the justice system faster than it take to write it. Or dead.

you know these 'paid' vacations lower your salary, right? It's not godsend, you work for it.
Eh, you're going to be too dead tired to work those extra days anyway, so might as well get a vacation and some pocket money.

Plus the person is kinda wrong. Employers hire someone because they have a list of tasks that need to be completed. If you complete your tasks in using 10 vs 11 months of labor it doesnt really matter. They looked at the task and said 'im willing to pay 100k to get this thing done'.

Have you ever negotiated this...?
Of course. Rules say that is common because of my age, nobody makes exceptions. Way too much regulation and bureaucracy. That's the dark side of social welfare: you have to take it and you have to pay for it. Most people pay much more than they get because of the costs for administration.

Well, nobody wants to be under the blade of guillotine, so you can't exactly blame them.

I don't blame anyone, but still it's a myth that european employers are so nice to give benefits for free.
They never gave it for free. We just put guns on the table of negotiation at the end of ww2 European employers aren't nice, but when you have a sten guns pointed straight at your balls you better be really fucking nice. Or you end up like a few who really pissed off their employee and found themselves dangling at the end of a rope for treason.
