He wouldn't, of course. But the unreality seems out of place when the main effort is to be real about addiction.
The reality is that people DO recover from addiction and DO go on to live fruitful and fulfilling lives with loved ones. That is what the developer is portraying here - from experience. He doesn't want to dwell on people failing, and bless him for that.

The harem aspects might be unrealistic in anything but a porn game, but you don't have to play that way.

Sure. And I can skip parts of a book that I would rather not read. All of which leaves me feeling like there was a sort of missed opportunity for me to have learned something. Even though there was nothing to learn in those parts. Make sense?

This is a game .. we are here to game some. Movies or series are scripted pieces of drama where you are cold and just read the pitch on the tomb stones of some looser characters, like in the movies you are talking about, where the relationship died, it was murdered then repeately by both partners after being raped by each of them separately - rather disgusting methods to those base human beings who decided to fail at their lives as actual human beings who are meant to live in relationships, to work things out, to overcome and to come together.
I am probably expecting too much. The thing I will always remember though, is the ending of the movie "Days of wine and roses". It is the story of an alcoholic couple. He gets sober, she does not, so he must leave. In the end, she sobers up and comes to ask him to take her back, so they can be as they were at first when he was teaching her to drink. Yes, he has tremendous guilt for that. He says, no he must not do that. So she leaves. He sees her under a street light out his window. The anguish in his voice as he calls to her tears your heart.

Real, real, real.

The other part of it is that she does not return when he does that. Because she knows that she should not ask that, and in the end, she still loves him too. Oh, god.
Yes, that is one of the all-time-great stories about addiction (done wonderfully in its initial TV production and again in its movie adaptation), but it is not the story this developer wants to tell. It is his story to tell after all, and why would he want to replicate someone else's?
Sure. And I can skip parts of a book that I would rather not read. All of which leaves me feeling like there was a sort of missed opportunity for me to have learned something. Even though there was nothing to learn in those parts. Make sense?
This game gets it about what it means to game and also what it means - as a motivation for human beings - it is coming together, not drama for the sake of drama or whatever nonsensical motive to dissolute a relationship because of the protagonist vices. In this game, vices do not kill relationships and this makes this game wonderful and endearing, as opposed to the scripted drama of movies where vices scare the humanity and anything of value out of the protagonists.

Hmm, I'm getting intelligent person vibes perhaps colored by a bit of social politics. I might be too old to speak your language, but that won't stop me. Of course.

Ok, I'm going to risk it and claim that humans are much more complex than you seem to imagine.

True, but also unreal. Ok, old guy out. How did I do?

A book, unlike a VN, is meant to be read from beginning to end. Unless you are playing a kinetic novel, VN's (like this one) have choices for you to make. Every choice you make in a VN takes you down a different pathway. It might just be a sentence or two, or you could change the outcome of the game completely with one choice.

So, every time you make a choice in a VN, you are missing something. It is designed into the format and is unavoidable.

In this game, some of the choices you make can cause you to miss sexual content. So, yeah, that's one kind of missed opportunity. But it is inevitable if you don't like harems.

By the way, other choices can cause the MC to relapse - another kind of missed opportunity to learn something. Then again, it is impossible for the MC to relapse and to not relapse, which means you will miss learning something whichever way you choose. What a conundrum!

Why not just play the game, making the choices that feel right to you, and allow others to make the choices that feel right to them?

You mean why can't I dump Lydia and make Barb my exclusive smooch? Because Lydia feels too vulnerable. I don't want to do that to her. As I suggested earlier, there might be a way for her to get sober and decide mc is not going to make it. Barb would need extra extra winning to get her back after mc relapse, no doubt. Good story. Courtship in a vn. What a novel idea.

From what I have read in the op I know I'll like this game.
I just have one question who is that beautiful woman with pinkish hair on the front page?

I must romance her.
Are there any awesome romantic moments with her?

Exactly! That's the problem here!

I know you, dude! You'll only give her headpats all day, you'll cuddle her every night, and last and the worst you'll take her out on ice cream for breakfast day! You're up to no good!

Hey, Joshy92, all jokes aside. If you want to play this game, you should. It's really awesome. Just be aware it's with a hard topic and the start is rough until some point. But it would be a terrible AVN if it hadn't that start. You'll see what I mean when you get there. Take my advise and play your first playthrough without the walkthrough mod. The mod is good and I use it too but the first run at any update should be without it. Just one thing you really should do:
You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.
And don't forget to give Brenda some love. She's a good one! No joke.

Thank you for the advice Tremonia.
I'll definitely give it a try. It sounds like my type of game.

I don't use walkthrough mods in any game really.

Just to be clear. I'm not at all trying to be unkind to you or condescending. The things you mention are how you would write the story. But, this is my story and I'm telling it the way I want to, loosely based on my own personal experience (the story is of course fiction however). So, no I'm not leaving chapters out of the book.

Ask my patrons if you don't believe me, but I don't take requests. I look at suggestions. But, if you read back through this thread I've said it probably a dozen times. Devs who let the community and patrons shape their vision end up failing horribly.

I've seen it so many times when I was just a modder and did walkthroughs. If I change it to how you want it. Someone else wouldn't like that. If I changed it to what any specific person wants I wouldn't like it. That's why there are 1000's of games on here. Many of which I would change things in (some of the ones I've played that is), but it's not my right to suggest it be done by someone else. That's their vision not mine. It's something they made for me to consume and choose how I feel about it.

Then there is always the option of creating your own artistic vision. That way you can have everything just the way you'd like it (who knows maybe that's part of the reason I started writing my own VN). But, be ready for people to tell you you're doing it wrong or how they would do it differently. Cheers!

And just for the record, I wouldn't consider myself young by a long shot.

Actually, I have no such abilities. So I would not write the story.

Of course they do. We aren't writers.

Freedom of artistic expression belongs to those who have such abilities.

Right, a while back I was accusing one Canto Forte of causing me to feel intelligent person vibes, and thinking that my advanced age might prevent me from even being able to speak their language. Metaphorically.

Fine. I was expressing the bind I feel in this story relative to Lydia's well being, understanding, of course that issue is entirely in your hands. But I still feel.

And my point was that there might be a way to resolve that tension. My suggestion of how that might be possible was not intended to be exhaustive of all possible resolvings in any sense. I leave that entirely to your creative juices.

I wrote before about choices the player has in a game. Well, the developer has choices to make too. Obviously, a completely open-ended game is impossible to write. Do you realize how many choices you make during the course of one day? Any one of which could change your life dramatically. So, even in a sandbox game, the developer has to choose what to allow and what not to allow for the player.

This developer has chosen NOT to allow the story to unfold the way you want. I suggest he is not about to follow your wishes. I believe you are pissing into the wind. Sorry.

You sound like you think I was demanding something. It feels to me like I was hoping for a simple discussion, and you are demanding that I "don't go there".

As for me, I got to the point where it was clear that the mc was going to fuck his probation officer, and I thought this fantasyland has clearly sailed off the edge of the world into "here be drgaons" (for that among the other reasons). So I became unwilling to continue. So far, I have not, but feel a little enouraged by Zoey's post about future episodes. But that is simply me, and I encourage anybody who wants to talk about such things with me. But maybe nobody does. So it goes in online forums.

No, I just think you are asking for something that will never happen and is an exercise in futility.

As for me demanding, you read me wrong; I never ever demand on a forum. It is not in me.

As for having a simple discussion - what do you expect? People either agree with the plot choice you suggest or they don't. It's all subjective. Perhaps others will engage with you here. I don't see the point.

Same thing could be said for playing video games in general. Or spending decades of your life chasing after the constant flow of new stuff on a mmorpg as some obviously do.

I did say what I expect. But it is also true that I am comparing forums a little bit, ODaT with Being a DIK. The BAD forum is a constant whirlwind madhouse of people positing, guessing all sorts of things. It helps keep interest in the game going, which is useful to the dev when time between updates is so long. The interesting thing for me is that the f95 forum is the most interesting one around for BAD. My suspicion is that that forum is part of the reason for the success of the game, even though downloads here are considered pirated by the game dev.
