I've completed a comprehensive English localization for the game, transforming the original Japanese text into a Western fantasy setting while preserving the core story and gameplay elements. This translation reimagines the feudal Japanese setting with Western names and cultural equivalents.
What's Included
This localization package includes three main files:
1. NonJpn_Name_table.txt - Complete Character & Entity Names
2. NonJpn_Text_Event.txt - Event Dialogue & Tutorials
- 418 entries fully translated (100% coverage)
- All character names westernized
- Class and role names adapted to Western fantasy equivalents
- Location and faction names reimagined
3. NonJpn_Text_Event_Prod.txt - Production Event Text
- 74 entries translated (94.9% coverage)
- Story event text and character dialogue
- Tutorial messages and briefings
- 4 entries intentionally omitted (placeholders or system text)
- 142 entries translated (98.7% coverage)
- Additional story content and encounters
- Side events and optional dialogue
- Remaining entries are for future expansion content

Note: Make sure to back up your original files before installing!
- Locate your game's StreamingAssets folder
HAGOKORO_Data\StreamingAssets
- Drop the files into the directory replacing the existing NonJpn files
- The game should recognize and load the custom localization when you select "Non-Japanese" from the title
- Verify in-game that character names and dialogue appear in English

I've now finished the first draft of my localization with all events localized. All that is left to do is clear up some dialogue that is missing the variable names and sometimes it has the speaker's name in the dialogue.

I'd like to start off by saying this:
I am but one man. I am no mind reader, I am no voice of the people, and I am not any sort of representative. Everything I say is my opinion and my opinion alone. Other people may share it, and other people may not share it, but I make no claims as to knowing how many are on either side of that.
I'm not going to go off on you for translating. I never want to discourage that. Translating is ONLY a good thing. We always need more translators, and I know from attempting to do so myself a while back just how much a hassle it is. So I have nothing but props for you for doing it. Genuinely, thank you for taking the task upon yourself and seeing it through.
But I feel a very important thing to remember is this:
You are not a writer, and this is not your story.
You are a translator, and this story is made by someone else. You need to respect that.
In my opinion, translators should not be doing some of the things you've done.
Like ALL of point 1 and 2.
The whole "western fantasy reimagining" thing. Just... why? It wasn't needed at all, in my eyes. Because this very explicitly is NOT a western fantasy, and it's clear that was NEVER what it was intended to be. The "samurai culture" that you've gotten rid of is what this story was based around. It was the entire point. And now it's just gone.
You didn't need to change the character's names. You didn't need to change the setting. You didn't need to do ANY of that.
Now, the titles? I'm fine with some of the those being changed, because they make sense. Miko to Shrine Maiden? Oiran to Courtesan? "x-sama" to "Lord X" and other such things? I'm fine with those. They're accurate translations, or accurate enough. They weren't 100% needed, but I understand there's people who don't know that stuff or don't automatically make the connection, so I don't mind it.
Some other ones, like Ashigaru for example, did NOT need to be changed.
Did you have your reasons for doing this? I'm sure you did. But like I said, I'm not a mind reader. And, to me, this reads as changing things solely to change things. That's something you should never do.
I had more stuff to say, but it all came into my head when I was about to go to sleep, and this is just the stuff I remember now that I'm awake.
Maybe I'm overreacting. Maybe this is a stupid thing to get worked up over. Maybe no one else cares, and I'm the only one who does. But I need to say it anyways. Because in my eyes, translators are supposed to make changes only when needed.
Take, for example, a joke that works because of the structure of the Japanese language. How do you translate that? There's different answers to this, and I've seen different answers to this, but my philosophy is this:
- Is it possible to make it work in English? If so, do it. If not, move down a point.
- Is it possible to make another very similar joke that still gets the point across? If so, do it and add a translator's note about it. If not, move down a point.
- If you can't do either of the above points to make it work, translate it literally and add a translator's note about it.
And this stuff... well, it just doesn't follow that philosophy. In my opinion, all that does is make for a worse end product, and erode my trust. I can't, in good conscience, trust it now to be faithful anymore. Because it isn't.
That's about it. If I remember more of the stuff I wanted to say, or come up with more stuff I want to say, I'll either edit this post or make another. Not sure. But... yeah.
