Yes, there is a VN-mode. You will be asked at some point if you want to play the Sandbox- or the VN-mode.

You should just be able to copy the save folder inside the game folder into the v0.4.0 game folder fine. Doesn't say anything about saves not working for new version. Also, your secondary saves are also stored in appdata folder, so you should be good, and it should automatically detect your saves.
