Guess who?

Its Tamaracks dad.

Original Text:

Well, well, well, look who has decided to show up, and not even in the first Step. It's the other Baumann man of the family. But don't call him Mr. Baumann, that's his father. You can call him Dr. Baumann.
Frederick is Tamarack's father and Ernst and Dorothea's only son. He's got a master's degree and a PhD in physical sciences. He's what you might call a "life-long learner". Frederick is always researching, whether it's for school, his job, or simply to pass the time. And he is extremely independent and self-reliant. He left his family home as soon as he could get into college and has never looked back. His life is his own, as far as he sees it.

Frederick is like if Opa wasn't just a grumbly old man who looked tougher than he was and instead actually wasn't that nice of a guy. He isn't actively mean, but he has no interest in things he has no interest in, not even to be polite. Visiting his aging parents is a chore; Frederick puts it off as long as possible. Though, his mom is unfairly naggy with him and his dad is difficult to connect with. So, there are reasons he believes spending time with them is a fruitless endeavor. Frederick feels as if all that's happening is out of family obligation: he has to put up with people who want his company without having ever understood him. It's been a big disappoint for Omi and Opa to have a tense relationship with their boy.
Of course, that was their history when it was two parents and their son. It's only become more complicated, and more strained, with the creation of Frederick's own family.

He got married and then Tamarack came along. The couple had wanted her. It was their hope to have a true family of their own away from their parents. But that's not how it worked out. Both Tamarack's father and mother chose to pursue time-intensive degrees. They also needed to not completely go broke while doing that. When Tamarack was very small they homeschooled her so they could all work at the house, things could stay focused and together. As Tamarack got older and needed more out of life than just her parents, they didn't have the bandwidth to support her. And, at the very least, they were smart enough to decide Tamarack could spend some time staying with her (mostly) retired paternal grandparents. Omi and Opa didn't need to worry about school or work and were more than happy to shower their granddaughter in attention. How long that was going to last has always changed. Originally, it was only going to be for her final year of elementary school, 5th grade. But we all know that didn't happen. By Step 2 it's been four years since Tamarack began living with her grandparents. Frederick has his PhD at this point and you have to wonder if now is finally when Tamarack and her parents will rekindle their own little family home.
Except not really because Tamarack obviously isn't moving away from Golden Grove halfway through the game, haha.

Poor Tamarack...but I find really interesting how they match the tone of the game to the season they chose. OL2 seems a lot more gloomy than OL1 was and we can see it on the characters relationship with other ppl (the Baumann family and Baxter's parents) or how they feel about themselves (basically most of the cast has some problem in step 2). Really excited to play this game the amount of care is amazing.

It probably also helped that a lot of people wanted to see them write for some heavier things.

Take the relationship with our mother.
The moms in OL1 were always the same, no matter what you did and you couldn't do anything about it.
It feels so wrong to not at least have an option with them.
Not even like with Opal, where you can basically teen angst hate her in the Step 2 preview (and IIRC GB confirmed you can end up somewhat estranged from her).
But just any option to have some problem or feelings about them that aren't ignored or just straight up not there.
Even the like one time you can pick an option about finding them difficult, it is entirely glossed over and makes zero difference (step 2, when you go over for dinner with Cove and his parents).

Jesus, poor Tamarack. Can't wait to see this dynamic play out in the game though, and how it'll affect Tamaracks character development.

Tamarack Bedroom Sketch (Step 1, Sketch)

Text:

Wow! It's a pretty, princess bedroom, specially designed by Omi and Opa for their granddaughter. Hard to believe it used to be Frederick's room, haha.
There are gonna be some changes in the final version. The plants will be replaced with toys, Tamarack is not responsible enough to have plants in her room as a kid, haha. But it is exciting to know she's gonna invite you over to her room.

Cant wait to have my character be severely depressed from all her friends distancing through all of step 2.

Also I like how your characters feelings about moving over are remembered through other moments, my character HATED leaving their previous town and the game usually gives her a more gloomy or angst outlook on things and the option to reinforcing that it's usually there, lotta hopes for the game.

Our Life 2: Wheels Script Snippet 2 (Patreon)
One option in the Moment "Wheels" is to join a race against Qiu and Ren. But if you don't wanna do that, you, Tamarack, and Baxter of all people are gonna have to find a way to entertain yourselves. It goes as well as you might expect, haha.

Our Life: Now & Forever Beta Build 1.3.8 (PC, Mac, Android)

It's here! The final beta build for 2023. And this is an interesting one. For quite a while we knew pretty much what to expect because multiple betas were for the linked Moments Walks and Wheels, which revealed the whole premise for both stories right away. Now we're getting into more unknown territory. This build has added Part 1 of the Moment "Fancy Fun". So, at least we know it'll be a good time, haha.

I haven't added suggestion from last month's beta yet! The build is releasing sooner than usual this month, so there wasn't as much time to do them.
Download Links:

And since we've had some problems in the past with so many people downloading beta builds that they get locked out by Google Drive, I've uploaded mirror builds! If the first ones listed don't work, you can try these.

Or you can bypass the quota by logging in to a Google Drive account, then on the file's download page, click "Add shortcut to Drive" in the upper right corner. Save it to your Drive, then create a new folder, put it inside, and download the folder!
Save files from the prior beta should work in this beta!
New Content:
  • Fancy Fun Part 1
  • Small fixes to typos/errors from the prior build
  • Additional BG locations and alterations
  • Additional outfit for Qiu
  • Added chapter cards
Well, I hope you have a good time at the dance hall. It's always exciting to introduce a brand new Moment. Feel free to let me know if you run into any issues!
