The choices marked with heart indicate you want the relationship with character in question to be of romantic nature. The lust icon indicates you're thinking with your other head and they invoke sex-related activities without any deeper feelings behind it.

When it's a member of the opposite sex who is single, it is very strange to encourage someone just to become their friend. You are fully aware of the risk of it becoming more than a casual friendship.

Not to me. She knows that they have similar interests so why shouldn't she try to have Stan socialize with more people and become friends since that's one of his character flaws.

I'm aware of the belief that a man and a woman can never be friends, but that isn't applicable to every relationship. Especially if at least one of the two parties isn't interested. Stan and Holly geek it out, they can spend hours talking without considering a relationship.
Not that I disagree that Stan likely forms a crush pretty quickly on her. Then she will reject him, if she is taken.

Holly and Stan hit it up at the pub on their own without Lenas intervention (though she has to like Stan and invite him). So Lena has the option to further encourage Holly to socialize with him.
There is no common ground Holly has with Robert and Mike, Ivy setting her up with Mark and Lena with Robert is just a pretense for sex and more or less spellt out. Lena is clearly not telling Holly to hang out with Stan because of the great sex he provides.

I suppose the game has sunk in so porn driven that the idea of a normal friendship just became too alien.

I don't think Ian, when he's in a relationship with Holly, would be too happy if he knew that Lena was encouraging her to befriend Stan. In fact he has the option to "intervene" when he sees them chatting at the concert.
