You're missing a lot of things in this discussion. August and Chuck are friends and partners. August is a mob boss. Chuck is an oligarch. Kathleen, also a partner, is a Socialite and Politically connected through her husband (a Judge). They are ostensibly equal, but Chuck is the real boss, as he's the money man. He's also deranged. August is not deranged, he's just got no qualms against violence or murder, if it's warranted. On August and Hana: He objectively isn't "using" Edwin like sure he probably realizes he isnt acitvely pushing her away but it cant be just to get Hana closer to the club because Edwin (even if you plan to stay in the club) has repeatedly asked himself about Kathleen/the club mostly in relation to Darius going missing and thats not even considering any changes that come from Edwin deleting his mom's stuff or not. Is it really so out of left field that even an "evil vicious mob boss" (just forget he didn't want the dude who "insulted" Hana to be punished as harshly) could be missing his daughter and doing what he can to try to get closer to her in his old ass age? Almost like him and Edwin have a direct conversation about that
It really "hurts" august characters when he's reduced to Chuck but less intelligent, more boring (in the sense of as soon as you see him you know 100% about him), and with more basic motivations (family vs whatever the fuck Chuck wants on the day). I guess Chuck allows August's 'manipulation" of Edwin and his realationship with Hana but tells kathleen multiple times to lay off Edwin because....... bros before hos?
Edit: how many "big bad 4d chess playing" Mob bosses have willingly been under someone else in a criminal enterprise? When Chuck (a civilian) says "no august you are too boring we are going to go a more fun route with this guy (the debt)" that reaaaaaallllllly does not give off ultra badass mob boss energy
Mob bosses do not want to do violence, it's bad for business. They rely on the real threat of violence to avoid it. The threat has to be real. He is also using everybody, even those he cares about.
Yes, he seems to really want to repair the relationship with Hana, but do we know why? Is it a legacy thing? Does he regret how he treated her, and basically abandoned her? We do not know. Mob bosses have to be cunning, but that doesn't make him a genius like Chuck (or even Kathleen).
Chuck is a genius weapons developer and scientist. Sophie might be the only one at his level, and maybe her boss.
