I agree 4 months seems like the absolute minimum; end of November feels like the soonest a complete exhibition could be done, with mid-December feeling much more realistic.

I was ambivalent about their choice until you raised the revenue angle. I'm sure there are other people like me who support for the month of a release, so splitting could help TD & Gil. I'm officially team 2 release.

The word, image, and animation totals are all well aligned with previous releases even before starting the actual exhibition, so any accusations of milking would fall flat.

They said that they had enough content done to release an update now, but that would mean dividing the exhibition in two parts and that second part would take 3-4 months do be done and ready for release. If they did that, we could have Ch4Up6 Part 1 in August and Ch4Up6 Part 2 around December. What I meant was that I wouldn´t mind waiting one or two extra months on top of those 3-4 months if it meant I could play the whole exhibition in one update.

I'd prefer one update right now with a second update of the first part released one image at a time. The third update should include all the videos and the fourth only teasers for the other half and then a full release of the chapter by the end of the year. That way GILF & T1000 will be able to cash in the dopamine from all the positive feedback critique they crave so much and still have enough material left for an early Christmas.

i am ok with waiting few more months for the nxt update
the devs said that they like to end the exhibition update with a cliffhanger
if we get a split update then the current story would have to be altered in a way to end it in a cliffhanger again like it did last update
sure we would all love the update now but in long term it could hurt the flow of the story

TD has already mentioned this update already has a lot of content, it wouldn't just be a small one, after all, it's been 7 months, that's the usual dev time for most of the updates and those tend to be meaty enough.

I'm very curious on how TD and Gil would opperate if they do break the update in two, would they release the other half as soon as the exhibition part is finished, so we'd be looking at another update in 3-4 months, or would they keep going and add a bit more content after exhibition?

I'm fine with both options, but both have their ups and downs

Eh, I think I have a reasonably solid estimate of the time involved. I'm willing to wait, but I agree it will be a significant pause that could dampen interest in the game.

I'm virtually certain a hypothetical Chapter 4 Update 7 would still end after the Exhibition (plus the usual wrap-up). But I'm also sure it will still take more than 3-4 months, both because I'm expecting a lot of work just to complete the Exhibition and because if and when they split it I suspect they'll be a lot more willing to flesh out new ideas that crop up in the telling. That's a good thing in the long run given the general quality of their work, but it will take time.

I space out a giant update over a week minimum anyway. I find digesting a handful of scenes at a time to be much more enjoyable than binging in one go. A couple months off in the midst of a giant event like the exhibition sounds perfect.

I imagine a pause would also allow for a mental refresh with even the possibility of new ideas to creep in from the dev side.

Not a game dev but as a programmer myself, I'd prefer split the update into two because of two reasons:
- Feature creep are very much a thing, stick to a predefined scope. It's better to split a big update into smaller one, provided that each of the smaller updates is full-fledged.
- A successful release milestone helps boost morale, less features in a release -> reduce cognitive load and maybe it will enable your brain to come up with new ideas.
Another selfish reason is I can use it as an excuse to replay the previous update for a complete story

For example the Pale Carnation's developers can split a week in three updates, where the first two are placed during the week and the third during the exhibition, but this doesn't mean all the updates will have an equal size. On the contrary it is higly probable that the third update will be the greatest one among the three and the developers cannot split this update in two, without breaking a part of the story which is indivisible.

I'm not sure why you think we're failing to account for all this; if anything my estimates are a month or so longer than yours and I still favor the single release (assuming the devs are comfortable with the long wait, of course). I worry that chopping up the Exhibition will result in a very high concentration of my least favorite content in the second half. Now, the devs might be able to mitigate that by adding more variety to the second half once it's split, but from my point of view that just means we have to wait even longer to get to the good stuff after the Exhibition.

We all have our reasons for or against a split release, but I don't think it's helpful to insist people who disagree with you must have miscounted.

Well, the devs are on record in saying the update can be split, it's just a question of how much the split would lessen the impact of the material.

It seems pretty clear the devs feel the lost impact would be significant, and thus would prefer to keep the halves together if all else was equal. But all else is not equal. There are external consequences (both to the fans and to the devs themselves) of a really long development cycle, and those have to be factored in as well.

I don't think there's a perfect solution to the dilemma, but as I've said I trust the devs to make the best choice for the game.
