If you're looking to add something different from other games? I'd suggest Special Renders during the sleep sequences, using the personality of each character as inspiration to show how they sleep. Instead of just fading to black as they sleep from day to day. It may add opportunity for readers to see a different side of the characters. Think of it as an eyecatch during your favorite anime. May give another opportunity for an on-going poll.

My reasoning to block and ignore almost all Sandbox games is Story Fragmentation.

Sandbox isn't inherently bad, but it's seldom done well in the scope of a VN.

I'm giving you my two cents before bed, so take whatever I say/typos with a grain of salt. As far as considering sandbox, you have to ask what is it really bringing to your game? I mean, as far I can see, your game is very narration/story driven. All of the consequences and plot are going to be driven by choices. So what becomes the purpose of a sandbox? Sure it gives you access to timed events, but in reality, you need the events that have to happen to push the plot forward happen. That becomes an exercise in frustration for players who "missed" the window, or can't find the proper sequence to trigger an event. Give someone the ability to do something, they will find a way to screw it up.

That's not to say there isn't merits in sandbox, its just what will yours be? Hiding scenes or content is not the way to go, though there is an argument for to reward people who are particular about finding certain triggers/events and rewards for people who are dedicated and find things through clues in the story. But that becomes a bonus thing, and again, what is that doing for your game and the people who are playing? I would think if you were to implement a sandbox, it has to be fun, something that people just actively want to do. The most obvious route to me would be to incorporate minigames, but are those things people even want in a porn game? While something like that is fun in a normal life-sim game, its not the goal of someone when their blood isn't necessarily all going to their brain.

False agency most of the time. The issue is when you have something story/narrative driven by its core, there are some things that HAVE to happen. I honestly get annoyed seeing choices pop up in games that actually don't mean anything because its already been decided that only one actual answer is correct and will be forced anyway.

So back to the point again: there has to be SOMETHING the sandbox is actually providing. Agency is not it in this case.

If there's ever a requirement for a walkthrough mod, I'll sooner just implement descriptions into the choices and such so that you can just follow them. At this time, however, there's only a single option in the game that's purely for flavor alone.

I wouldn't say that Sorreah hates sandboxes. He's making fairly objective points regarding the issue.

My final words on it all at the moment is that I'm still undecided and I won't be implementing it for a while, if at all. I'd need fairly sufficient reasons to do so that give benefit without trading out one playerbase for another. I'm not really sure if that's possible, so there's a high potential it won't happen. All is in flux and to be determined.

OR... you have to find the fucking things at the right time on the right room... OR ... you are late for the "event" and have to reload a save of 10 hours ago to be there at that specific time advancing the time to wait for it...

Is this what you call agency? Is there even a point in this exercise in frustration? Is this a story? All this for what? Repeat H scenes? Make a fucking gallery... done.

Sandbox is the stupidest way to tell a story. Now, if you are NOT interested anymore in telling a story, and all you want is to frustrate the hell out of everyone that was foolish enough to believe you were going to do that, then yes, move to a Sandbox.

Yeah, you're not wrong there. I think it'll come down to some sort of balance. Personally, I can appreciate sandbox games to an extent as they let me repeat content that sometimes is just too good to play through only once.

All food for thought. Fear not, it'll be quite a while before I do sandbox stuff and IF I even do sandbox stuff at all.

Except they're not really anything to do with sandbox. probably 70% of all the choices on F95 are in one way or another not real choices at all. Either the same as the alternative or "you can't get through and decide to go the other way after all..."
besides, there's no proof we actually have any agency IRL either. But people do like to feel like they do.
I don't care about sandbox much one way or the other, what I dislike is irrational hate.

Agreed. Sandbox is almost always done poorly in these games.

Devs game is currently rated highly and seems to be doing well. Why fuck with something that's working? How does adding sandbox make the game more fun and enjoyable for the majority of players? How much dev time will be spent on making sandbox instead of other content?

CGs are well done, story is interesting and character design is on point.
Since the discussion seems to be about sandbox or not at this point, I'll add my opinion in more detail than just the poll.

Sandbox for the sake of padding out the content behind meaningless actions to get to the advancement of the story and spicy scenes is such a detriment to well told story. Most of the times it seems newer devs want to provide more "content" to attract more paid subscribers, the thought behind it is sound but the execution is often very lackluster.

I prefer the VN style of storytelling with branching paths (sub vs dom for example), a well told story is so much more immersive without abrupt interruptions to the pacing for pointless sandbox mechanics.

My suggestion is to limit the scope for your first game and learn and develop your skills, but it's your game and you do you

It's a polyamorous relationship but in a similar form of a harem with MC being the only male of the group. So some girls will be having fun with each other yes.

No it won't be avoidable, it might be skippable. Will see how it goes when I get to that point.

Skippable means you just don't see it happen.
