the one pet peeve i can say about this game is mostly that the main protag hasn't really changed since he first started. his body looks the same. he hasn't bulked up a bit or gotten defined muscle over time from any excessive physical combat or heavy work load and he's still kind of a sub...yeah he's slick but also a bit of a comical coward in some ways and it just...bugs me....with all the crap he's been through you'd think he'd have developed more of a pair of balls on em and maybe not let certain thing derail him somehow? i know i am prolly just whining a tad but i know i'm not the first one to say a lot of us are tired of these scrawny comical dudes somehow fucking to some kind of success i guess? hard to put into words prolly. don't get me wrong i have always loved the game but i just wish the main protag would show some real visual growth i guess both physically and personal character too. like i said he's still the same person he was when he started and that's just kind of....boring i guess
For RPGM games you have to copy the save files from the old version and paste them into the save folder of the new version
Tinkerer would have to make literally hundreds of alternate images showing the MC with different physiques/appearances, and tie which ones to show based on the MC's level. There's a lot of questlines you don't have to do right away, don't have to follow up on, or even skip entirely. Mia, the giants, the vampires, Liandra & Luthien, etc.
The alternative is to have more experienced models at certain points in the game while accepting doing some of those side questlines later will show the MC with the "less-experienced" models if you don't do them until later in the game. Not doing Mia's quests until you're Lvl 20+ and getting early-game images of the MC when you do it would be kinda weird in my book. I'd rather have a consistent MC appearance than jumping back and forth with it.

Yes: I'm using a save from years ago and it's compatible.
Install the new version, load it up, create a new save in slot #1, then copy/paste the old file into it (and rename it "file1.rpgsave"):
However, loaded up an ancient save for the new build and discovered a nasty bug:
If you buy a dog (pet) then level it up, but then do the "hunting the snow deer" quest, it will vanish permanently if it is in your party when you hit the "cross the frigid stream" part of the goblin quest. Having searched all the spots where it should be left (Giant camp, town, city etc etc), I'm kinda annoyed: grinding out lvl 10 on the dog / familiar is really annoying to do.
The worst part is that if you've saved after starting the quest (sigh) you can't return to the camp to leave it at the spot you're intended to leave it at. -.-
So, yeah, don't do that. Unlike the familiar who actively warps in/out for quests, you need to manually leave the Dog before doing major quests.
~Edit, also the quest "Master's Loot" doesn't complete even if you beat the red-haired vamp & get her to wear it, but that's kinda just minor. But it's a bug that hasn't been fixed since I last played which... was over 3 years ago.

Automatic backup does not work when I sleep with the tavern. Before I was asked, yes I activate them manually in the menu
You always can. Grab the whole save folder and copy it over the new verison. You need the "global.rpgsave" in dorder for the game know which slot have a save.
