First off, it's not just about blindly trusting. All the release date info and stuff comes straight from the dev's Discord channel. The checksums pulled from the open chat in his Discord. Anyone can check it themselves, just hop into his channel – links are in the OP.
Second, there's been a bunch of times where some asshole adds their own code with a virus into the original game files, then repackages the game archive and drops the download links here. This way, you can at least check if some random dude stuck their virus-ridden crap into the original update. And since these compressed versions are based on leaked builds, it's like, the bare minimum you can do to check the game files before you unpack the archive.
If someone got a hold of the game on a "Sus" place. what makes you think they are on this forum watching this thread and|or even know about the checksum?
you say the compressed version is based on leaked versions. arent they all?. but we have no guarantee for that.
you can only blindly trust that the compressor is honest, have no bad intentions.
Yes ofc repacking the game with malware/viruses in them is bad.
But once the game is compresses it will have get another checksum and its impossible to "reverse" the checksum to the original to check if good or not.
Dont get me wrong. checksums are fine and a good thing.
My point was: checksums are useless without the actual data.
So why just release the checksum? "because someone on a sus site might get the hold of it?"
The person who will upload the game to this site can add the check sum to the post so people can verify it.
Posting a checksum without the actual data feels more like an annoying teaser for upcoming release.
