Still not abandoned. It's just really, really slow. Because they're just volunteers making this game for no money.

The twitter for the artist is
They stream to twitch at and their about tab has a link to a discord where it's been said as recently as a few days ago that it's still being worked on when someone asked.

First good pokemon game on this website and is cancelled... Damn!
Still not canceled, just taking forever to get updates made and rolled out. They basically started rebuilding the whole thing from scratch at one point, so between that and not having a consistent staff, it takes a long while to get things done. Honestly, the art assets are ahead of the actual content at this point.

annnd BOOOOOOOM! officially abandoned lmao...
Well at least now we have confirmation instead of speculation. Still sucks though especially considering it was by their own choice why things even got harder for them.

So the game is officially abandoned. However, they did release all of the stuff they had, in case anyone wants to use it, in the news channel of their official Discord. I'll link those things below for convenience for anyone who's interested:

This first one is all of the assets. That's models, expressions, CGs, etc:

This second one is the script. That's all the documentation about how the game was planned to play out:

At this point I really had to wonder how things would have been different had they not try to port this to Unity and instead stick with Ren'py.

I understood why they wanted to change to Unity due to wanting more freedom for what they want with the Game. But if they hadn't done that I'm wondering if updates would have been more common or at least the Game would still be continued to this day.

The logistics of making it all work did create a big heap of stuff to do. One of the major recurring problems though was a lack of writing staff. The game had very few writers, and had difficulty holding onto them. This is a shame, especially considering that their standards for picking writers was so intensive. There was a lot of quality assurance going on regarding character dialogue, done in order to assure that everyone would sound unique.

How intensive was the requirement to be a writer? Considering your example of them going to great extent with making every character feel unique it must have been a bit high.

Regardless the more I think about it the more I realize if they were having troubles with writing then this was a slowly sinking ship despite the near titanic like quality and potential it had as pokemon visual novel.

I was following the development for most of its life, and they did some actual searches. The kind where they had a document talking about their goals for writing the game, and asked people to submit writing samples so that they could put together a small, hand-picked group of people who they thought would be best for it.

To the surprise of everyone, they just put out a uncanceling this project. Similarly, it's been mentioned where a link to a new demo has been put up with the announcement.
in short it's back? damn, guess you'll never know what kind of things runs through their heads when they make, remake, remake, remake, cancel then remake. but thankfully they're back...

The playable demo is mostly like the last version of the game, though with some noticeable tweaks. It's not all the same people this time, and the scope of the game is supposedly going to be reasonable enough to actually get done this time.
