They just made an announcement recently about how they basically have been overhauling everything (including the art) while switching from Ren'Py to Unity. And that they're going to be making the art assets available so that people can mod their own stories. So not only is the project not dead, but fan stuff can happen, for those of you who think that you want more/different content.

There's definitely reasons for that, and they mostly have to do with complications with development. For a long time, they had a revolving door of volunteer writers. And then they had to figure out how to implement a Pokemon battle system in Ren'Py. And then because the game was getting to be too big of a project, they took in feedback and then decided to not only cut the game down to one year from three years, but to move the whole thing to Unity, which would support the game better. It's likely that once the first Unity release comes out, updates will be much more frequent (especially compared to the last however long it's been since the most recent Ren'Py version came out).

Actually, this game has been explicitly said by the developers (very early on even) to have no planned adult content. Just because it's here doesn't mean that it's getting sexual material as opposed to somewhere else.
However, since the changes to the way that the game is going to release will include materials for people to make fan games with, it's very possible for other people to make their own spin-off titles with sexual content.
