I'm personally in the camp that he'll never give an explanation cause there isn't one. He's already done with the update and is just extending his cash cow a little longer with the final main update. I think he is burnt out and had the realization that he probably doesn't want to make another game after PV so is pushing his work out.

BUT, we will all never know the reason so to each his own.
WWG made much more money when he had frequent shorter updates and what ifs. Once this update is released he'll be releasing epilogues every few weeks. The delay also caused a decrease in subs/money.

It makes no sense for him to sit on the update for months. Once the update drops it will likely have 1.5x the amount of content as last due to last chance. It'll be easy to check like every other update by seeing the amount of renders and animations in the new folders.

I think it's completely fine to criticize WWG for lack of communication and a last minute massive delay but saying he did it intentionally to profit makes no sense. He offered refunds for the month which a lot of people accepted.

Edit: You can look at a chart of his patreon earnings here. Post last chapter release in January 2024 it dropped to 2021 levels

WWG's already said he'll be making post-game bonus content, and he's mentioned for years now that he's got another game planned, so supporters have reasons to stick around after this update. Sitting on the update would do needless damage to his reputation.

Personally I think WWG is just trying to outdo himself with this update. For years now, each new chapter has been bigger and better than the previous one. And since this will be the final chapter, I think he feels pressure to create a good ending, lest it be a disappointment and (worst-case) retroactively taint the entire game.

Could WWG actually be burned out, and secretly planning to retire? Time will tell.

Yes, that's why he said he'd do refunds if requested.
If he felt like the delay was worth giving refunds he could have just paused peoples payments for the two months (or more?) he's going to be late.
He would rather appear reasonable by making the offer knowing less than 1% will go through the effort than actually take a real hit to his income.

No. It's up to the patrons, like me, to decide if we want to continue supporting him. He could leave it open and we can choose to continue supporting him or not.

He's not forcing us to continue making payment. we are CHOOSING to continue supporting him. The reason he did the refund in march, was because he originally said release will be in march. so people may have signed up thinking they were going to get the game that month. so he gave out refunds in case anyone subbed specifically for that month to get a copy.

he owes us nothing after that.

On the other hand, if this is WWG's main source of income, pausing payments might affect his ability to buy electricity and food. I imagine the release would be very delayed if he starves to death in the dark. :WeSmart:

Yeah I wasn't trying to suggest it as a good idea or even a morally right idea. I've just noticed "he offered refunds" gets used over and over as a conversation ending truth nuke that absolves whatwhy of all criticism when in reality it's basically nothing

I mean if I remember correctly he's paused the payments before due to a delay.

He's paused his Patreon before due to delays, what changed now? He offered refunds knowing full well only a small number would pursue it and drop patronage, which his numbers reflect. It makes him look like a thoughtful Dev while he continues his main income stream of $4,500 while doing potentially minimal to zero work.
