If he felt like the delay was worth giving refunds he could have just paused peoples payments for the two months (or more?) he's going to be late.
He would rather appear reasonable by making the offer knowing less than 1% will go through the effort than actually take a real hit to his income.
No. It's up to the patrons, like me, to decide if we want to continue supporting him. He could leave it open and we can choose to continue supporting him or not.
He's not forcing us to continue making payment. we are CHOOSING to continue supporting him. The reason he did the refund in march, was because he originally said release will be in march. so people may have signed up thinking they were going to get the game that month. so he gave out refunds in case anyone subbed specifically for that month to get a copy.

On the other hand, if this is WWG's main source of income, pausing payments might affect his ability to buy electricity and food. I imagine the release would be very delayed if he starves to death in the dark.

Yeah I wasn't trying to suggest it as a good idea or even a morally right idea. I've just noticed "he offered refunds" gets used over and over as a conversation ending truth nuke that absolves whatwhy of all criticism when in reality it's basically nothing

Thanks, I have the link to that post. I'm quite sure there have been wallpapers since. That link only goes upto Jan of this year. Apologies if I'm wrong.

He's paused his Patreon before due to delays, what changed now? He offered refunds knowing full well only a small number would pursue it and drop patronage, which his numbers reflect. It makes him look like a thoughtful Dev while he continues his main income stream of $4,500 while doing potentially minimal to zero work.

WWG made much more money when he had frequent shorter updates and what ifs. Once this update is released he'll be releasing epilogues every few weeks. The delay also caused a decrease in subs/money.
It makes no sense for him to sit on the update for months. Once the update drops it will likely have 1.5x the amount of content as last due to last chance. It'll be easy to check like every other update by seeing the amount of renders and animations in the new folders.
I think it's completely fine to criticize WWG for lack of communication and a last minute massive delay but saying he did it intentionally to profit makes no sense. He offered refunds for the month which a lot of people accepted.
Edit: You can look at a chart of his patreon earnings here. Post last chapter release in January 2024 it dropped to 2021 levels
You just gave a perfect reason why he'd intentionally delay in your own graph, while saying it makes no sense. After the last chapter he had the largest and longest duration decline in earnings he's ever had, if we ignore the release week spikes. His earnings dipped to the lowest they had been in 3 years, if he is anticipating another decline (or an even bigger one with this being the final chapter) that is plenty of incentive to hold the release date. On top of that when developing a new game his first cycle time will likely grow even longer, needing to develop all new assets and a brand new story; which will likely lose more earnings. As well as losing players who were just dedicated to PV or NTR fans who would leave if his next project does end up being vanilla like he's suggested. There is plenty of monetary reason for him to want to extend this release and the release of the epilogues.
Add to it his odd, vague, and inconsistent communication it is 100% a plausible scenario.
The communication went from "I'm working on this non-stop, were at 95%"
to
"Actually, I wasn't working on it non-stop like I said before because of personal issues, so it will take 2+ more months"
I know a lot of you excuse the delays/communication as "he's just the worst of all time at predicting timelines" when it seems to me he's just flat out dishonest. Think whatever you want, I know my opinion. Just don't be shocked when his epilogues take way longer than he said previously, and he eventually announces he's no longer moving forward with his next game.
Time will tell who's right, I hope you are because he does make a good product, my personal opinion of WWG himself aside.

The drop off after last update is due to him switching from what ifs and dream scenes to last chances. Extending the time period with no content is what caused the decrease.
Again he's already said epilogues will happen and what ifs are on the table while he works on the new game. If he were maximizing profits for the least amount of work he would've kept updates chapter 10's size and kept doing what ifs.
No one's giving up an extra $20k a year on purpose just to release a weak update that tanks support. And that extra $20K is assuming there would've been no growth if he kept updates small alongside what ifs.
