Depends on the surgery, I had spinal surgery for a slipped disk and initially I could only sit for 10 minutes before I was in agony. It took about 2 months to fully heal and sit without the pain but everyone's different with recovery and we have no idea what surgery's he's had.

he said he can barely sit for 15 minutes at a time. how is that "feeling good enough to be able to sit for an extended period"? it doesn't matter how demanding sitting is, if it's painful to sit, he can't work.
