Don't forget off site backup in case you have a break in or other disaster at your house.While it is certainly possible to recover data from a crashed HD, it is by no means guaranteed.
Much better practice IMO, is having up-to-date backups, backups and more backups, both of the incremental kind and clones.
HD's and docks are cheap. Back-up software can be scheduled.
With this, even if my Mac went up in smoke before my eyes, I would at most lose a couple hours of recent work, nothing more.
