Nah, it is possible to survive without mods. some amount of luck if required but generally, what you need is to set up an s-shape corridor about 3-5 rows and fill it traps, place two towers with goblin archers behind the corridor, an orc to stall them if they get pass the bottleneck and one final tower at the back if the the orc fails. It give enough time for you to prepare for a few days.

The issue there is you'll still take losses, and if you're only using the MC for breeding you cannot replace your loses, so you'll eventually die to attrition. So again, you need mods to enable the MC to produce units capable of fighting for it to be possible since otherwise you'll only ever have the handful you start with.

Guys, little question: but this game has a defined goal, or is just "resist wave after wave until you'll get a game over"?

The game is still in development so there isn't currently an end goal, though there might be one added closer to when the game is finished since MBM (their previous breeding game) had an end goal.

Even without the corridor, just spam goblins and the shortstacks
ranged outdoes everything at the moment

I mean, that is true but also not the question asked. Hard to spam goblins and shortstacks with only the MC as the 'stud' so to speak.
