Whether it's treated like in some places around the world today, who knows, but at the very least it's considered an unusual kink that people might be more willing to keep to themselves. Even in a setting where same-sex attraction isn't a big deal, if you've lived your life thinking you aren't attracted to the same sex but suddenly realize you might be in some cases, it's not unreasonable to assume that might at least briefly cause some cognitive dissonance. Particularly if you have an existing platonic relationship and are uncertain how adding a sexual dynamic might change things.
