Rance 7 is supposed to be hard on your first play through. The only consequence to failing on any of the difficulty checks is that they'll make it easier at the cost of NG+ points.
It doesn't matter if its intentionally difficult by design or unintentionally by bad design, hard is hard. You need to know how to recruit good units, can't lose them, can't be overwhelmed by warring with multiple nations, ideally conquer non progress and progress nations in a healthy order (so that Xavier doesn't come to soon, and if you are too slow he comes anyways). The first forced story fight is fairly hard if you haven't recruited high level units. Later on, the Demon Army confronts you with a Blitz, infection, Apostle event that murders your units, fruit quest to prevent Miki, at last a countdown and the Final Boss is tricky since Rance and (hopefully leveled) Kentarou have to stay alive for the entire fight.

By comparison, Rance VI allows you to grind, train and upgrade at leisure, you can retreat on difficult quests. The only bad design is missing important upgrades.

Having played Sengoku blind, I don't think (most) of the curve balls the game throws your way the first time around are an instant game lose. When you do lose you can go back and retry the latest combat at a lower difficulty until you pass. I say most cause some of the timed events CAN brick your save... that is, if you weren't saving frequently enough. You also really don't need good units. I was able to clear the game without any Zeth commander, no Magician/Maria, no Takeda commander. I had about 10 Samurai, 5 ashigaru, 3 bad ninjas, 2 Monks and a ton of archers. Was it painfully hard? Yeah. Impossible? Far from it.

Design wise Senroku has this quirk where if you go in blind you should be mostly fine, but as soon as you pull up a guide and half-ass your run in you are in for a rude awakening as by rushing through events you are making the game harder on yourself.

Granted, first time I lost Kenshin cause I thought she would be fine when I reached her. Had to reload a save from 10 turns ago after I beat Xavier and found that I had, in fact, lost her for the run.

But yeah, VI is so, so much easier.

On my first run, I recruited the old men because they had high non combat stats. Was fine conquering territorities one by one, but then came the first story fight (Apostel, Apostel, Xavier) and I couldn't beat them, since I barely had units suited for dungeon/boss battles.

It's true that you can and should reload a few turns occasionaly to cancel out a bad decision.

Maybe i missed something? Like a respec function? Because this is a wtf/10 design score.
If you ignore and avoid fights you'll run into issues way earlier than the Lil Avenger fight.

This would probably feel weird if you came to 5D after playing other games in the franchise but not-so-weird if you're accustomed to the grind-happy design of the older titles.

Overview:
Rance is an adult fantasy RPG started by Alicesoft in 1988. The series focuses on a character named Rance who was designed to be the opposite of the hero characters in traditional Japanese RPGs of the time. Consequently Rance is an extremely selfish, violent, horny asshole, and if he does anything good, it's usually by accident.
