Regarding Gary in particular, I wouldn't consider him a big dev at all, just look at his Patreon numbers and add that he already has complained in the past about getting low income from Patreon also spending so much time between updates is not exactly helping him in that regard.
I mean, this is entirely his own fault. He could easily split his massive Updates into smaller Updates, which would still be very big. I have not played the most recent one, but the one before could have easily be split into 3 or even 4 Updates, which would then require a third or fourth of the time between Updates.
I dont mind to wait for Updates, but I would never consider supporting someone who spends almost 2 years to develop one Update. This would be around 24 months of me paying and not receiving the main reason why I pay - sure, people get Wallpapers and Stuff, but this would not be interesting for me. But if instead of having to wait 20 months or so for an Update, I would gladly wait 5 months for it and would still have a decent amount of playtime.
If the quality of the content is good (and this game IS of very high quality), then there might be other reasons why people dont want to support. Could be prizing or update cycle and I think for Realm Invader it is clearly the latter.
Like, I think this is an overreaction and I am expecting everything to return to normal when they forget about us and move to other things, but I can understand Devs not wanting to risk it.
While I also think like that and hope that you are right, from what I have read the Dev seemed to not really put a workaround in the game which allows him to add incest at a later date, if the topic is not as hot anymore, but completely removed incest from the game.
