Lots of text and little freedom for the player. I've done nothing but fight soldiers and read, it gets boring very quickly. For those of you who've already played, when does the fun start and what we're all here for?

Yeah... This is the kind of game this is. There are only two free roams where players can wander around and discover scenes. Besides that, everything is "go there", "talk to this guy", etc... This is not a proper RPG game where you roam and figure out stuff from the start. For the most part, everything is very linear. It plays more like a VN than an RPG game.

It's as if you need files, used in the game, that don't come with the game, for the game to run.

I always thought it was a one-man show. At least from what he wrote on his blog. He used to talk about how he wanted to draw realistic women. I think he (Scale Garden) was doing everything except scripting. But this is just my guess.

It is definitely Scale Garden himself. His style is far too unique for it to be any other artist. There are artists like Crimson or Omangarl who come close, but in the end they are completely different. After most people were so massively filtered by his latest game Pink Slave and its art style, they began to cry like children since it was "too experimental" for them, he has certainly given up drawing.
If he's still working in the industry, it's probably either as a game designer, since all his combat systems are quite unique, or as a simple colourist. I've searched all the artists in his fetish area a hundred times, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't draw anymore.

sorry its been so long I don't think I can help you with this anymore. I'm totally out of the loop with this game lol.
Have you tried uninstalling your RTP and instead using the japanese version of the RTP? I don't remember which game it was but I remember there was a game which requiered me to have the japanese version of all the runtime packages installed. and thats what I did, till even to this day. changed my locale to japanese, installed the japanese version of all common RTP's , changed my locale back to english and since then I don't really have problems anymore.
