Personally, I never understood this crusade from Patreon. It's fiction, and as long a game doesn't condone it I don't see the issue. What, if Game Of Thrones is mentioned, does that mean a dev can have issues?Since the recent crusade against all things possibly 'incest' struck Patreon, it has become increasingly difficult to determine a developer's intent in this matter. Even when developers avoid Patreon and use another funding source, there seems to be a reluctance to write games with straight-forward incest content, lest the 'disease' spread to their funding source.
I can understand that players want to know how developers want their games to play out. I do too, because that's how I want to play the game. I'm an incest proponent, but if the developer wants something else, I don't want any part of a patch that forces incest into the game. I WANT to play the game as the developer intends, regardless.
If we can read the code, which is always possible in a Ren'Py game, we can look for 'patchability' - how easy can a patch be employed? Are the relationships modifiable, either through choices or through a specific trigger? But that's a lot to ask of the average gamer. Those here who do have that ability, could post their findings on this matter here on F95. But then, do we run the risk of some Crusader running off to Patreon with the news, in an attempt to pull down the game?
I do not see an easy solution to this.
For me, as an incest fetishist, I am at least encouraged that some developers still start incest games, even with funding on Patreon. How long those games will remain funded is another question.
I really don't understand what's the goal of it and why Patreon has such popularity. Not to mention that the platform already had it's fair share of controversies, no idea why it grew so much when many other platforms already did similar.
Fortunely Jestur still has Subscribestar and itch.io (unfortunely no Steam due Honey Select), but I guess it still would be quite an hit of the money cashing in if his Patreon went down.
That's my point as well. I don't like games when they have incest for the sake of having incest. But when it fits the story well I'm pleased to have it. I like it as long it is well written, and that reinforces what I mentioned above, while I like incest, I don't like if it messes with the story. Should be something to enrich the plot, and not something that forces the plot to change and decrease in quality.I think the patch works well with this story. I've never tried without it, so I can't say how the story plays out that way, but at no point did anything feel forced. The relationships between the characters make sense. I've seen stories where a fan made patch did not work well and it was obvious the writing did not support it (a favourite broken line in one was when the patch had the MC refer to his sister saying "she's like a sister to me").
If the patch were to no longer be usable with newer versions, I would happily switch to playing without it. I believe the story is written such that it works well either way and it should not break my saves.
I won't speak to the dev's intent. I have my opinion on that but it is mine alone.
