This game is a 5/5, and there is no argument; it’s one of the best visual novels I’ve ever played, let alone erotic visual novels. It’s leagues above the usual offerings you’ll find here:
- Well-written characters
- A plot that matters and is going places
- An art style that makes it stand out (call it bulbous or whatever; at least it's unique, and the artist is clearly improving with time)
- Just about every flavour of kink
If you haven’t played it, do so. Play it next, play it now.
Oh, also, I’d like to add that this is a female-friendly game. I didn’t hesitate to show it to my partner and encourage her to play it. Not that some girls aren’t into it (or that this game doesn’t have it), but it’s nice to see a game where women not only have agency instead of being living fleshlights, but where there also isn’t wall-to-wall dub/non-con.
And one more thing: the setting—it’s Warhammer meets DnD/Pathfinder, and it’s not subtle. It’s not a wink at the camera; it’s not “oh, they’re X with the serial numbers filed off.” They’re “X with the name struck out and written over in biro.” For example, the ‘Azorites’ are 8th edition Dark Elves from Warhammer Fantasy, down to having a civil war that blew up Not!Ulthuan, sailing to Not!Nagarroth, and living as sadomasochistic slavers. This is a YMMV thing; it doesn’t bother me, but it might irk some people.
Now, simply because I am prolix and overvalue my own opinions, I’m going to state what are, in reality, minor inconveniences that, even at their highest, wouldn’t drop this rating below a 5. I think this game has two major pain points:
- The format
- The patron model/iterative development
The Format
This is a CYOA visual novel; however, the choices never really matter (not that you should expect them to, given how narrative-driven the game is) and often detract from the game in two ways:
- Cat (the MC) is not an empty vessel for the reader to self-insert as; she has her own history, personality, opinions, beliefs, and ‘voice’. Don’t get me wrong—she’s written as a morally flexible, slutty, omnisexual, versatile switch to make it as easy on the author as possible to facilitate—but it still makes some of the choices jarring if they would be out of character for Cat, which hurts suspension of disbelief.
- Because most sex scenes start with the ‘HAVE SEX (if you want to) HERE’ button, some of them can feel tacked on, as if the author wanted to do more storytelling but felt they ‘needed’ a scene for players to get their money’s worth. For example, there is a scene where Cat’s having a conversation with the
Dark Elf Azorite character in a tavern, and you can have hot exhibitionist sex in an alley, only for the scene to return to the tavern if you haven’t exhausted all of the world-building dialogue yet, as if both characters didn’t just have brain-melting orgasms.
The Patron Model/Iterative Development
- Scope Creep
Due to Patreon voting, the author’s interests changing over time, or just plain boredom, the scope and direction of the game have changed at least twice. Case in point: the initial conceit of the game fell by the wayside all too quickly (not that ‘hijinks to get out of debt’ was very compelling). I’m also personally of the belief that the intended villains have changed at least twice. Needless to say, many less integral plot threads have fallen by the wayside over time—perhaps for the better, perhaps not.
- Too Many Characters
Something of an extension of the above, but it’s plain to see that as characters have been added over time, the relationships have (necessarily) flattened. Some characters go for vast sections of the game just disappearing entirely, only to pop up again at the start of what was doubtless a new update. Some characters have clearly been added to fit a certain freak/kink or trope and either were unpopular with the patrons or perhaps the author and have just been left to moulder. Some characters have been in the game for years and still don’t have scenes.
The most obvious example is Elenore. Because she is Cat’s first companion, she goes a long time as the only one competing for Cat’s attention. Hence, her relationship with Cat is far better characterized and much deeper than the cat boy. Although even Elenore is having trouble competing for the spotlight at this point. Not to mention they are still adding what, in my view, are shaping up to be new love interests/fuck buddies to the story. It is unfortunate, but the product is clearly becoming shallower and looser over time.
All of that said, despite the ink I've spilled, these amount to minor annoyances at best. Don’t let them distract you from playing this game.
