Sadly, I lean to the same conclusion. There is hardly a way they didn't have enough money and there is hardly a way they didn't have another option but using AI as is.I suspect they might have started with the idea of having artists touch up the AI stuff, realized that artists would (rightly) charge as much for their work on editing these pictures as if they were working on stuff from scratch, and very quickly decided that they'd rather keep hoarding money instead at the cost of quality, especially since having artists fix things would have taken longer than just getting the bare minimum from Stable Diffusion, and the sooner they put out any given update, the sooner they get more money. It's not the first project I've seen in the past year where this has happened.
So, yeah, if it walks like greed, flies like greed and quaks like greed, its likely to be greed. And I would like to be wrong on this one.
