if i'm not wrong, it's been a while since i did that puzzle, it's a try and error puzzle but that must be most of it

If you wanna do it right - get a red glass piece from upstairs and use it to see the path. But hey - if it works, it works.

(Somehow I missed that solution as well on my first playthrough.)
