In this game, they're definitely not 12, probably around 15 or 16. I think the series started with them at about 11-12, and each game seems to skip a year or so. Also, basic puberty development charting.
OP, for the "Other Games" section, as far as I know the games of the series are, in order, Grandfather 1, 2, Hanako, Tamaki, Kimiko, Maiko, and now Saki. Mura and Caged Bird seem to be set in the same universe of quasi 60s-70s Japan, but I don't know how tied into the main series they are.

It's about what the pixels depict. Images of real children are also pixels.
The real debate is whether or not somebody is harmed (directly or indirectly) due to the existence of the images to the extent that no one should have the ability to consume them.
That said, until somebody can empirically prove the consumption of pixels depicting fake characters has a relevant negative impact, they're harmless.
