Tutorial Sandboxie Plus Quick Start.

Would anyone have insight on if there are any Sandboxie settings that may help with speeding up save creation when running Renpy games via Sandboxie? I've noticed for multiple games that when trying to create saves there's a decent lag to saving the game inside Sandboxie compared to when it's running outside the box.

To be honest, there are very few settings on the files and on a quick look through them I didn't find anything that could be responsible for performance. I didn't notice any performance degradation when saving, but maybe it's because I have a powerful processor.
By the way, where are the sandbox files stored? On SSD or maybe on USBDrive?

It all depends on how you set your Sandboxie Plus and where your files you are executing from. Which colobancuz ask you on previous message above.

Example 1:
- Sandboxie Plus installed on local system
- Sandboxie configured to save on local system
- Original AVNs and/or other applications on local system

The performance should be at it fastest rate.

Example 2:
- Sandboxie Plus installed on local system
- Sandboxie configured to save on SD card
- Original AVNs and/or other applications on external drive

This performance may not have the best performance. SD card (Read and write speed is very slow compare to local system. It also depend on what storage device you are using, such as NVMe drive, SSD, SATA, etc. The fastest storage device ATM would be NVMe drive.

Example 3:
- Sandboxie Plus installed on local system (NVMe storage)
- Sandboxie configured to save on local system (SATA storage)
- Original AVNs and/or other applications on network drive

This may be a little faster than "Example 2" it all depends on the network drive and the SATA storage read/write speed.

Again, without enough information about your system and how your Sandboxie setup. Again, we have to keep in mind that Sandboxie may degrade the performance a little bit, however it shouldn't effect that much what you have stated.

I have Sandboxie installed on my local drive, which is an SSD. Before, I configured a folder within my Downloads folder to run all my Renpy games through Sandboxie. But then I moved future games directly into my Sandbox folder within the C:// drive since the methods of attack changed.

Again, without enough information about your system and how your Sandboxie setup. Again, we have to keep in mind that Sandboxie may degrade the performance a little bit, however it shouldn't effect that much what you have stated.

I believe my setup corresponds to your Example 1. Sandboxie is installed on my local drive, any saves I make are stored within the Sandbox Folders in my C:// drive and moved when needed to my local drive. And the games are not a external or network drive but within the local system.

Well... In this case based on your issue "first time" save for Ren'PY game in sanboxie plus takes a little longer than doing it on the host (not using the sandboxie Plus). Here are only few other possibility: (I do not need to know these answer of the following options)
1. Physical RAM - Depending on what Microsoft Windows version you are running may need more RAM than expected.
* Could open Task Manager to see Processor performance and RAM usage (Memory usage). If your system using more than 70% of the RAM, it may cause some lagging.
2. Number of resources running in background of Windows
3. Number of Application(s) running at the moment

Again, it might not be an issue on your system, it may be possible minor issue that Sandboxie (vendor/developer) may need to correct. I may have not have the latest version installed at this moment. (havent update it in few months)

For Sandboxie Plus,when i created the box for AVNs, I have it create a separate folder like C:\Sandboxie-AVNs as a default location for that box. I would download the AVNs in a different location or like most people may have it in "Download" folder. I extract the AVNs and then execute the game through Sandboxie's box.

F95 has been under attack recently (see https://f95zone.to/threads/recent-malware-infected-games.207437/ for details) and a good way to protect yourself is to run games in a sandbox. There are several sandboxes available (even from Microsoft, built into Windows), but here we will look at Sandboxie Plus. There used to be a setup guide, but it was deleted and people are asking for it to be restored. Which I have tried to do (well, as best I could).

What does Sandboxie do? It runs programs (games) in an isolated environment, preventing (well, almost) any changes to the host system. It also allows you to block internet access for isolated programs, preventing them from downloading malware or sending personal information to hackers. Sandboxie Plus has the ability to create multiple sandboxes, each with its own settings. For example, with or without internet access allowed.

As this is a sandbox and not a virtual machine, it offers maximum performance and access to the hardware. I've run games on UE and Unity with heavy graphics without any problems and haven't noticed any performance degradation, at least not in-game. Sometimes games take longer than usual to start due to copying files inside the sandbox.

How Sandboxie Plus works with files
For each sandbox created in Sandboxie, an isolated file-system folder is created, but you don't need to copy anything there (or from there), as Sandboxie allows you to use files from your system, and only when an isolated program tries to modify a file in the system (or create a new one), it will be placed in this isolated file-system, and the program will continue to work with it without noticing the change. When you are finished, you can either find this file in the sandbox folder yourself, or use the Recovery Sandboxie tool. You can also do this automatically when clearing (deleting the contents of) the sandbox by specifying the folder to be restored in the settings. How to set it up and use it is described below.

This manual is intended as a quick start and does not contain details on the operation and configuration of Sandboxie. If you are interested in the details, use the forum (there is a link on the application's website).
Warning! I am not an expert in using Sandboxie and am only sharing my experience as a regular user. If you have any useful comments - post them in the thread. Right after the setup wizard, the global Sandboxie Plus settings will open. There are a lot of things you can configure here, but in short, you can leave everything as it is, except for three things:
1. Check 'Hide Sandboxie's own processes from the task list' so that no viruses can see that the sandbox is running. Of course, this will not protect you from sandbox detection, but it is something.

2. Enable 'Show file recovery window when emptying sandboxes'. If enabled, you will be offered to recover files from the sandbox when emptying it (manually or automatically). This must be enabled if you want to recover files automatically (see below).

3. Important addition (thanks to trumpthatbitch). You should restrict the ability to change Sandboxie settings to administrator accounts only. 6. El segundo escenario importante. Esto le permite deshabilitar el acceso a Internet (y a la red en su conjunto). Está habilitado de forma predeterminada. Para la mayoría de los juegos de este sitio, puede desactivarlo fácilmente. Para otros, use un espacio aislado separado.
Básicamente, no tienes que apagar esto aquí, puedes hacerlo después de configurarlo, mira aquí.
¡Importante! Algunos juegos pueden dejar de funcionar si bloqueas por completo el acceso a la red. La solución se describe aquí.

7. Para la gran mayoría de los juegos (y aplicaciones) no hay necesidad de mirar otros procesos. Así que activamos esta opción. Si desea ejecutar un tramposo, ejecútelo en la misma caja de arena, de lo contrario, no llegará al proceso del juego (aunque no lo he comprobado). La segunda opción también es útil, nada para que un juego normal interfiera con el sistema.

Cómo instalar/descomprimir juegos, parches y partidas guardadas.
Básicamente lo mismo que de costumbre, pero recuerde que si configura una carpeta forzada, los archivos deben apilarse fuera de ella y solo descomprimirse en esa carpeta. Lo mismo ocurre con los parches y las partidas guardadas. Si necesita editar un archivo (por ejemplo, texto), ejecute el editor y luego elija abrir el archivo en la carpeta. Entonces, cualquier cambio estará en su disco, no en el espacio aislado. Si el instalador ejecuta algún script DESDE la carpeta en la que se instala, las cosas pueden salir mal. Sería más fácil deshabilitar la carpeta forzada durante la instalación.

¿Es necesario limpiar automáticamente el sandbox?
De nada. Si juegas en un solo ordenador y no necesitas transferir tus partidas guardadas, puedes dejarlas en el sandbox. Incluso si comienzas una nueva versión del juego, tomará los archivos del sandbox (tienen prioridad sobre los que tienes en el disco). Y no hay problemas para recuperar archivos.
¡Pero! Si algo desagradable le llega, es posible que no rompa su sistema, pero puede romper fácilmente los archivos en SU caja de arena, es decir, sus guardados. Además, permanecerá en la caja de arena, puede recopilar datos (lo que sea que pueda obtener de la caja de arena) y tal vez de alguna manera pueda transferir esos datos. Cuanto más tiempo permanezca allí, más posibilidades tendrá de salir y hacer algún daño. Con la eliminación automática, todo se eliminará y el virus no podrá afianzarse.
Personalmente, prefiero el ligero inconveniente de la recuperación de archivos, pero depende de ti.

Cómo recuperar archivos de la caja de arena.
La forma más fácil es usar la función 'Recuperar archivos' de Sandboxie. Si tienes configuradas las carpetas de recuperación y la eliminación automática, verás una ventana como esta cuando termine el juego.

Puede elegir qué archivos desea recuperar (seleccione lo que necesita) y hacer clic en 'Recuperar'. That's it, the Sandboxie configuration is done. You now have a sandbox called “DefaultBox”. You can rename it or move the sandbox files to another location. 1. Appearance settings are up to you, but the default setting for windows of applications running in the sandbox is an annoying (to me) thick yellow border. I recommend removing it.

2. If you don't want to recover files from the sandbox manually (of course, saves go to an isolated folder), and to increase protection (even if something bad got into the files), I recommend enabling automatic sandbox cleanup. When you exit the application (game), if recovery folders are configured, a window will automatically appear asking you to select the files you want to recover. All sandbox content will then be deleted. If you are afraid of losing your saves, do not activate this option, you will have to restore everything manually.

3. This allows you to specify the folders that will be scanned for files to recover. There are default folders here, but you can add your own and/or delete existing folders.

For example, for Renpy games. For other engines you may need to add the whole AppData folder or even the games folder.
Warning! If you have set up automatic deletion and there are no files in the folders specified here when the game is finished, the recovery window will not appear and the sandbox content will be deleted. Pay attention to the recovery folders, find out where your games are saved and add them here. Another option is to create multiple sandboxes for different engines, so that it is easier to sort out which files to restore and which not to.

4. Off by default, but recommended. I would switch it on.

5. Here we can configure to force programs to run in the sandbox. There are several options, but I think the best one is a folder. Anything running in that folder will be sandboxed. This way you won't accidentally forget to select 'Run in sandbox' for every game (and every time). Very handy. You can add several folders, but I usually choose one and unzip the games into it (into sub-folders). It is important to remember that EVERYTHING that runs from this folder goes into the sandbox - for example, images and video viewers run in the sandbox, as do text files and links to the internet. The same goes for archivers. To avoid this, start a software (player, viewer, editor) and choose to open a file from this folder, then everything will be normal. Or turn off the forced folder for a while.

6. The second important setting. This allows you to disable access to the Internet (and the network as a whole). It is enabled by default. For most of the games on this site, you can easily turn it off. For others, use a separate sandbox.
Basically you don't have to switch this off here, you can do it after setting it up, see here.
Important! Some games may stop working if you completely block access to the network. The solution is described here.

7. For the vast majority of games (and applications) there is no need to look at other processes. So we turn this option on. If you want to run a cheater - run it in the same sandbox, otherwise it will not get to the game process (although I have not checked). The second option is also useful, nothing for a normal game to interfere with the system.

That's it, everything is set up.

How to install/unpack games, patches and saves.
Basically the same as usual, but remember that if you set up a forced folder, the archives should be stacked outside it, and only unpacked into that folder. The same goes for patches and saves. If you need to edit a file (e.g. text), run the editor and then choose to open the file in the folder. Then any changes will be on your disc, not in the sandbox. If the installer runs any scripts FROM the folder it installs in, things can go wrong. It would be easier to disable the forced folder during installation.

Is it even necessary to automatically clean the sandbox?
Not at all. If you're playing on a single computer and don't need to transfer your saves, you can leave them in the sandbox. Even if you start a new version of the game, it will take the files from the sandbox (they have priority over the ones you have on the disc). And there is no fuss about recovering files.
But! If something nasty gets through to you, it may not break your system, but it can easily break the files in YOUR sandbox, i.e. your saves. Also, it will stay in the sandbox, it can collect data (whatever it can get out of the sandbox), and maybe it can somehow transfer that data out. The longer it stays there, the more chances it has to get out and do some damage. With auto-removal, it will all be wiped out and the virus won't be able to get a foothold.
Personally, I prefer the slight inconvenience of file recovery, but it's up to you.

How to recover files from the sandbox.
The easiest way is to use Sandboxie's 'Recover Files' feature. If you have recovery folders and auto-delete configured, you will see a window like this when the game is finished.

You can choose which files you want to recover (select what you need) and click 'Recover'. This window will show you the files that have been moved to the configured recovery folders. If you want to restore (or just look at) all the files in the sandbox, tick the 'Show all files' box. Once you have restored all the files you need, click 'Delete content'. You can also choose not to delete and click 'Close'.
If you select 'Recover Files' from the sandbox context menu, you will see a similar window (there is no 'Delete Content' button).
You can simply go into the sandbox folder and copy the files you need. Normally, the files for each sandbox are located in C:\Sandboxie\%USERNAME%\%SANDBOXNAME%\.

I'm not sure, but it looks like you have some option enabled that is only available in the paid version. Check all settings to make sure that nothing with a certificate icon is enabled. It's like this

I have a question about the recory files, I'm testing this feature and followed all the steps and in the "Recorvery Files" option I added the whole Appdata/Roaming/Renpy folder but once I quit the game, of course it appears all the documents/files that are in the Romanig/Renpy folder
My questions are:
If I'm playing for example Being a dik, I have to choose the Being a dik file and click the "Recover files" button so that is not erased all the saves right?

I have a question about the recory files, I'm testing this feature and followed all the steps and in the "Recorvery Files" option I added the whole Appdata/Roaming/Renpy folder but once I quit the game, of course it appears all the documents/files that are in the Romanig/Renpy folder View attachment 4892572

I would have to look into that, when I have time to do the testing. I cannot promise to make time to look into that.

The truth, I do "Manual" backup of the save files into another location (*). I know my sandboxie plus been set to not to delete, however it is an habit for me to do anyway. I do the same when I run most AVNs/games in VM (Virtual Machine). There are low number of AVNs/games that requires 3D or high refresh rate I would run in Sandboxie Plus than running it in VM.

(*) I would compressed (into ZIP file, or other compressed format) the save folder, once it create it, I rename it like example for Artemis => ARTEMIS-0.6-pc-Sandboxie_Plus-saves.zip or WVM => WVM-S2-C1-E13-F-pc-saves.zip. If it been run in sandboxie, I add "sandboxie" in the file name. IF it been run in VM with 3D accelerator, then I would add "3D" in the file name. However, that is my pattern to know when I pull the save for new update, I know which environment to run the AVNs/games in one of the following: Sandboxie Plus, VM (no 3D accelerator), or VMwith 3D accelerator. I would place those compressed saves in another location.

If you look at the screenshots that someone posted they captured before the information been removed, I believe there are some points in there explains how to setup and allow certain applications that supports RPG/RPGM AVNs/games.

I havent tested that process since I have alternate method that is not related to Sandboxie Plus. Hopefully you find your answer you needed from those screenshots.

"Recover": When you click this button all files you have selected will be restored to their original location outside the sandbox and deleted in the sandbox. The window will not close and you can continue to restore files.
"Delete content": When you click this, ALL content in the sandbox will be deleted, that is, if you have not restored saves of other games - they will be deleted. The window closes (there is nothing else to do as the sandbox is empty).
"Close": Nothing is deleted and the sandbox keeps all files (except those that have been restored) and just closes this window. When you next start and close the game, this window will appear again and will include new files and old files stored in the sandbox.

Since you are testing the feature you obviously have save files from previous game runs, I recommend restoring ALL files from all games and only then clearing the sandbox. After that each game launch will add only files of this game to the sandbox and it will be easier to sort out. If you are afraid that something will be lost - create a separate sandbox for testing. But in general there is no need to create a separate sandbox for each game.

Glad you were able to find your solution.

At the meantime you may need to make a note. I am sure you can restrict it more on the free version. I would have to spend extra time looking at each of the function to narrow it down. however if you isolated the application correctly with proper sandboxie setting with some additional security setting, it should not be able to gain any information from host while it running in the "box".

I usually do not use any of the AVN/games that requires the internet access. If I go that route to allow the internet, I would get a cheap computer and test it on that and I wouldnt need to worry about any data loss.

I think I added this to the text (links) of the manual. In any case, I recommend creating a separate sandbox to run such games.

hmmm there was a problem mentioned somewhere else, that Sandboxie can have problems when internet is -active- and Sandboxie is set to 'deny internet' on it's own, down to Sandboxie even crashing or giving errors.
for some games, disabling the internet outside of Sandboxie (windows settings, or firewall: block all) helped with that.
i'm not certain if the same problem still exists with the latest version of Sandboxie Plus, because i use a different software for my virtual stuff.

total newbie to this. installed sandboxie and will test it out on an RPGM game soon. assuming it works fine, i only have one question - is copying, editing, deleting saves easy/non-difficult? sometimes i will do so when uploading a save file to saveeditor if i need to cheat (though not often). either way i will eventually find out on my own
