It's not necessary at all. The characters are the same, but the games couldn't be more different. Arena asks you at the beginning if you've played the prequel, and changes some lines depending on your answer, but most likely nothing important.
But if you really like the characters, you can try playing the prequel first, it's neat. Although the translation, despite being official, is not very good for that one.

its quite "yappy" in the beginning and can take sometime to get going, progression is story bound so its very linear (as far as i know). i played for about an hour and got bored, its more VN with a some combat. im not a fan of it but everyone has their tastes.
