VERY Solid Start!!
For my preference, animations are an extra. The key is having a good story. Much like Pixar in the beginning, they made a good story that all ages could appreciate. The Marvel movies up through Infinity Wars: Endgame were all story driven, and very popular as well.
The images are top notch. I like the fact I cannot tell if they are standard models. The lighting goes a long way towards making the scenes more believable.
As for the journal, the handwriting was a little thin for my preference. At first I had to concentrate to read it, but it got easier quickly.
I do think that if the Journal doesn't contain information or insights that the MC has regarding someone or a situation that you might not get in the game, it won't be of much use.
On the other hand, while the journal may not be necessary immediately after you played it, it may come in handy in future updates where you might need to refer back to things.

I like this idea of an entry in Gold until you've read it. But I might go one step further and say to date the entries as to when they were updated. You could add the date prior to the paragraph, or add a dated page for each update.JJJ84
When the player goes to the Journal, the updated entry is highlighted........ in gold?
With that, the player will know exactly which part to start reading (cause it's highlighted in gold, or whatever color), and don't have to sift through entire paragraphs to know where to read the Journal from.
And when the player exits the Journal, the gold highlight is gone, and the cycle repeats with each Journal update.
