This is a home-screen image. Jess is an integral part of the story. What other reason do you need?
She's there because the dev liked the idea of "hiding" her and the others in that image. Most people (me until the first post) won't even notice them in the background.

Personally, I find it stranger that the judge's daughter is in this picture. If you want to be romantic or philosophical, then (ignoring the judge's daughter), the other side of the street can be seen as the side that is home to the characters who had significant influence in Frank's old life, while the side with Frank is his current life and all the people who are currently shaping him. Jess sitting on the bench could be seen as waiting for him in the afterlife so that they can meet again one day.

While I, too, dislike the direction the story took, I accept that the author of the game has the final say in what he (or she) wants to create. And now that the developer has decided to make changes, I accept that, also. Personally, my desire is that the game gets completed and that it turns out to be something with which the developer is satisfied. Sometimes, I have the impression that fans of the game are more interested in having the developer create what they want instead of what he or she wants, and that seems both egocentric and self-indulgent to me.
But hey, I'm just a guy on the internet. My opinion is no more important than anyone else's.
What would be the largest issue you have with the story so far? Just out of pure curiosity?

I'm guessing incest vs non, originally it wasn't in the cards, now it is with the patreon shit, we will see
I'm not all caught up on the patreon drama (Since I prefer subscribestar.). I have picked up in passing about incest even step-siblings is a touch-y subject on patreon.

pretty much, they got banned, then not or whatever, now they are back again, real incest may be in the cards with the Becca side-story, we'll see where it all ends up

Since 2020, Patreon had a rule related to incest. Now, since 2023, Patreon has strict rules, such as "rape", "dark content" and of course "incest".
But "incest" there has always been a sore subject for Patreon.

That's how my story begins.
When I first heard of Single Again, I sort of rushed through the game trying to get to a sex scene. Skipping over Lilith's longing and got to Lilith. Abby was always on the fence about her relationship with Lilly as anything more than "we like each other and can have fun when we're not in a serious relationship" and both of them always expressed interest in boys. Lilly's shown more desire to be only with Abby than Abby ever showed in only being with Lilly, and Lilly NEVER only wanted to be with Abby.
