Thanks, MisterreX, that's basically my situation. I'm currently in the debugging phase of my other work, so I plan to get back to working with S4H very soon. I confess that I haven't been able to work on the game in the last few months, so I'll have to study where I left off to continue working.

Game development is a time-consuming job that needs focus. I would really like to only work on S4H and that's what I would have done if I had gotten enough funding, but that never happened. The reason I keep working is because this is my heart project and because the people who supported the project deserve to see the story continue.

Talking about deadlines and promised dates always makes me anxious, after all, I don't have much control over it. That's why I haven't been giving news and I'm sorry for that. I can only keep promising that I'll do my best and that's what I've been able to do.
Good luck to you. You likely won't receive any further support until your next update since people don't support games without updates (I personally blame Gumdrop and Icstor for scarring people). Sucks you never got support in the beginning but someone that's how it happens, I'd happily supported you back when I had a decent-paying job. Hopefully your project turns out well.

I think it becomes a vicious cycle, without updates without support, without support, it is more difficult to create updates and that is why so many developers end up giving up. I still have a few supporters who help me with at least words of encouragement, but the funding needed to keep the project in a safe flow has never come, and I think it may never come. So I'm more focused on making the best game I can.

If, to my surprise, S4H becomes popular after all the changes I'm making and I got decent funding, I have the sequels triggered and I can flood you with naughty content for a long time. If that doesn't happen I'll have the system ready and it won't be hard to cut the sex scenes out of my scripts and try to distribute my games on Steam as simple Adventure SFW games.

Either way, the journey will have been worth it. The only certainty I can give is that I will finish Steps 4 Happiness, take as long as it takes.

but the funding needed
They give up because they mistake a hobby for a career.

Regardless of how things have turned out in the adult gaming space, this is not a job. There is no guarantee of income here and most people that start down this road will not make any money. The average income from Patreon was 1k a month last time I checked and that's before they take their cut and taxes etc, so take home was between 500 and 600.

The amount of people that will earn enough to make a living doing this is a tiny fraction of the devs making adult games.

Every day more people release game and there is only so much money to go around especially after a global crisis many are still recovering from.

Even the bigger devs here have full time jobs because they know the money they make creating these games can stop at any moment.

Far too many people have the ridiculous notion that making game equals money and that's not how it works, that's not how it's ever worked.

It's taken some devs 2 or 3 games before they started making decent money and that took them years. Some devs that have been going years still aren't making money from this.

Making a living wage doing this makes those people incredibly lucky.

If the only reason a person makes games like this is to make money then the only bit of advice I can give them is to give up and find something else because the chances of them making any are very slim.

I agree with your general view, but your analysis does not take into account differences in the exchange rate and cost of living of poor countries. There's a reason most games are written in broken English. $500 would be enough to pay all my monthly bills and that would be left over. 600 would already be a dream. My goal on Patreon was just $200 a month. I'm only continuing to work on this game because I managed to save enough money to support myself for this period and because I intend to take advantage of the system I developed along with the game.

But I would never look at game development as a hobby. Playing video games is a hobby. It's advice I would give to anyone wanting to start making games, if all the time you have available is your leisure time, give it up and go do something else. This is extremely exhausting mental work. Working through this without taking time to relax would ruin anyone's mental health.

I don't know where you are from am I'm not interested in asking either, but you clearly have no idea how many 1k, 600 or 500 can be. If that's the "average", it's more than viable as a job if you can pay rent, bills, food and still save for the future with just your average.

Also, mentioning 500/600/1k when the dev is earning $67 is kinda a dick move is you ask me.

My mortgage is 1200 a month and I live in a pretty cheap place in the UK. 500 would just about cover my gas and electric for the month.

glad to hear that u gonna finish the game, whats the status for next update? :)
Hi, I still can't set a deadline. I am solving one step at a time. Right now I'm focusing on the characters. I redid all the textures by hand painting, which greatly improved the look. This week I started working on the clothes. There are several new locations and several characters were included, which makes this step time-consuming, but the work is flowing well.

I fully understand. This delay time would be inexcusable for a commercial product. It would make perfect sense to meet the public's expectations and accelerate development by reducing content and quality. But if I were to follow a commercial logic I would have already abandoned the project because I don't have enough public to justify the costs.

Development is ongoing because this is a personal project and not a commercial one. I have been honest with my supporters about this, including not receiving any money from my Patreons during this time. I'm following my vision of how the game should be, so it's not enough to add content, I need to restructure all the content already made and that takes time.

All I can say is that I'm still working and intend to continue until the game is finished. I am a lonely person working alone on a relatively large project and I need to divide my time between game development, my livelihood, and taking care of my health. If it comforts you more to consider the game abandoned, so be it. I continue working at the speed I can.
