I haven't gotten around to playing it myself yet, but Shards of the Past has received lots of praise in this thread recently. Don't know anything about Beyond Tomorrow.
Did read a couple of AVN's
- Simple beginnings
Hard to talk about this one. It seems to be a story first game, but you can't really tell what the story's actually going to be about. Her sister went missing... aaaaand that's basically it. You get some small story snippets here and there, but it's weird. It's supposed to have supernatural and horror elements somewhere down the line, but... we'll see I guess. Maybe?, Eventually?
Maybe this is a case for inspector Jufot to take over
- Dreamland
I mean, if you have a weird sense of humor, this is a pure goldmine. Right from the beginning up until the very end it's.., it's something else. Here are some of my personal highlights...
- Alex sitting on the shitter
- The MC getting caught by his grandma, jerking off
- The northern lights
- The oversized, unmissable collectables
- Mei wanting to buy condoms
- Summer reminiscing over the MC's cock
- Summer wanting to do a lingerie shoot in the middle of the woods..
- All the conversations about chili.... (including chili related branching)
- Lea threatening the MC to cut his dick off if he'd ever betray her....
- And a million things more
Alright look, if this game would turn into a classic "teen" slasher/horror AVN, all of this would make sense. The characters, the dialogue, just everything. I mean, c'mon now, Summer getting beheaded or something during her lingerie shoot would be a perfect way to kick things off imo. You could even make some cheap summer's gone joke along the way.. But it's an AVN and that's all there is to say about this.... No fun ever!
Well, other than that, I suppose it works out fine as a pure porn game since it has good animations and all that, but...

Game gave me some strong CP vibes so I pussed out after like 15 minutes....

Beyond Tomorrow could be a good first story game in the future. But right now there are few choices and you don't have any choices that change the story. The relationships are already formed and for now you have no choice to change that.
It's also strange to me that incest is in the avoided tags. There is a clear interest/passion between the sister and her brother, mentioned in a memory. Why did the author put something like that? Maybe to “justify” why the sister is currently dating another woman? Because of that forbidden love? Using this is wrong in my opinion, even for me who doesn't really like games with female/lesbian protagonists.

Damn, now I want to play an AVN in the Scream universe
It sucks so fucking much that developers are asked to justify why they don't want to do incest. The brother and sister get along well, sure, but how is that sexual passion? Like seriously, wtf? How is it "wrong" to write a close sibling relationship without it being sexual?

Yeah, that is a big turn off for an otherwise good AVN. I assume you are referring to the younger sister of that family that is justified by her having some sort of stunted growth and she is 18 really but coincidentally she not only looks younger, she behaves like she is younger as well.
From your answer you made it clear that you don't like incest as you completely ignored the real (in my opinion) problem (or maybe I didn't express myself correctly, and if that's the case, I'm sorry, English is not my native language). But the question was not whether or not there was incest. Is that why he put that scene in the game? I agree with you that throughout the game they are just siblings who get along well and that's precisely why this scene surprised me, and I'm sorry, but this scene is not a close relationship between siblings, her friend is saying that: the sister wanted the brother as her boyfriend.

This doesn't fit the story so far. Unless he uses it as an excuse, like I said above. And that, yes, is the real problem. Using forbidden love or romantic disappointment as an excuse for someone's bi/homosexuality. That's not how things work. Bi/homosexuals in general don't choose to be this way, they simply are. And I know this from life experience, following my younger brother since he was little. He's always been like this and it's okay. And don't get me wrong, this hasn't even happened in the game yet. But this scene is so strangely placed there, that it seems to me like it was something the developer forgot to change.

Like, when my brother (who is gay) was little, he would say he wanted to grow up and marry our mum one day and was heartbroken when he realized that's not how things work. No one has ever taken it as anything more than a funny story we like to embarrass him with

I would agree if she was a child, but according to the scene it was when she got drunk for the first time. Which I can't imagine a child doing. Either way, for me the scene is lost in the middle of the story. I still believe it's something the developer forgot to change. But I'm really enjoying the story. Bro, where did you see a clear interest/passion between siblings in this game? Of course, there is a lot of affection between them, and his sister teased him a few times, such as their conversation on phone messenger when he offered her to have a pizza and she responded with something like, “You're going on a date with a girl like me and all you can do is invite me for pizza?" But this obvious joke is obvious. And he just played along in this humorous dialogue. But I don't see the slightest hint of any sexual relationship between them, it's only affection and love between brother and sister. The dev repeated multiple times that there will be no incest between the MC and his sis/mom.
I answered this above. And the question is precisely, why add a scene like this, it doesn't fit the story.

Interesting, although I don't see any hint here of the serious feelings Olivia still retains for Dylan. Just a curious moment from their past, a childish nonsense, as important as her first hangover. And it was shown in the context of Liv and Sam's trip down memory lane, reminiscing about their shared happy childhood and laughing at funny moments of their lives.

Does such a thing exist? Whispering Pines made me really want to play some more slasher story VNs, but it seems to be almost completely unique in that regard.
It feels like mixing a Scream style mystery / horror and an AVN would be such a natural pairing, but apparently not.

For anyone looking for a good horror / mystery game that hasn't already played it, I recommend in the strongest possible terms Kara No Shojo (https://f95zone.to/threads/kara-no-shojo-v1-04-innocent-grey.1515/), which just also had a new recent remake, weirdly retitled as "The Shell: Part I: Inferno", which is on Steam but apparently hasn't been put on here yet. I think it's basically the same version as the above link, but now officially released in English.
That game is phenomenal, as it's sequel (the third hasn't been translated yet so I haven't played it), and I'm basically always looking for its equal but I've never found it yet.
Ooh, also, I was reading through this thread a lot last night and was really impressed by the quality of discussion.
One such discussion involved someone saying that more VNs should have the balls to kill off love interests in the sake of the story. If you want that type of thing to be possible, again, I recommend Kara No Shojo. It's all about the story there. If you want a happy go lucky story where everything is bound to turn out great, Kara No Shojo is not for you.
