Well, having checked this out finally after bookmarking it like.. 2 years ago or something, got some thoughts.
The lighting and scene framing are great, though I do think they're being a bit crutched up by the letterbox ratio, and I honestly don't think the letterbox is needed or really adds anything besides trying to aim for an arthouse type feel. The pacing is generally good, nothing feels overly rushed, at times it can feel a bit slow but I recognize the feel the game is going for so it works in favour of it.
As for the actual meat and potatoes of the game, that being the characters, it's a bit more difficult to say.
The MC sort of still just feels like a blank slate. I can't say that there are that many internal monologues that are good frameworks to outline who the MC is and how he approaches certain things and more just in-the-moment observations, I understand that this is probably to help individuals who self-insert, but for those like me who enjoy trying to get into the mind of the character, it leaves the MC feeling flat and one-dimensional.
Maybe this will be alleviated in the future, maybe it won't, just came off feeling more like a caricature of a person rather than a person.
Becca feels somewhat contradictory. Probably by design, but it's something that sort of gets shoved into your face when you interact with her. It's like it's a character that is meant to try to pull people in with how tough to read she is, but at the same time the dialogue and interactions almost contradict that design with her almost feeling like she's talking to a DMV clerk at times instead of the MC.
Again, probably by design, but it is pretty jarring and just tough to want to interact with that character even on the route. Honestly I found her interactions with her friends/fuckbuddies to be more interesting than her interactions with the MC.
Amy is actually a really good design. It's clear that she's dealing with something, but she doesn't let it dictate what she feels or does in the moment, despite her being at the bar basically is letting her emotions dictate her actions. She also dropped an Age of Empires 'wololo' quote which automatically bumps her like 20 points in my book. That being said, she also feels somewhat.. made for the MC if that makes sense? Like she was built to be a foil to him to begin with.
On top of that, some of the dialogue between them end up feeling a bit more manufactured and curated, maybe it's just that previous feeling influencing me, but it at times feels overly tropey and something straight out of an early 2000's wattpad romance novel (as in general flow and theme, not the writing itself).
I think both of them suffer from a lack of something really pulling me in and thinking about these characters in a romantic sense. I did work at a bar for a while and both of these types of individuals were more like ones that you saw every now and them, you were cordial, and that's about it so it might be colouring my impression more than I realize.
I think my main issue with Becca is that she either isn't accepting enough or dismissive enough of the MC, it feels like a character built to have a coping mechanism causing issues and being an obstacle, but it isn't there.. which makes it just feel very strange.
I think my main issue with Amy is that she sort of comes off more as a friend than a romantic interest in the way that she's built, and it doesn't help that she has history with the MC. I think she's a few dialogue tweaks from being a really solid character though.
Overall, it is a solid game, there's a lot of technical skill and it's clear that there's a decent amount of literary skill aswell. Just feels a bit weird having a game where neither of the LI's garner any sort of reaction from me.
