Most of all "NO SOAP" in the graphics or the stupid X-COM ground combat system pisses me off. And the hero with panties on his head  why can't make a stupid black mask with glowing eyes, damn it?
Have you ever had a case in your life when someone, well, JUST inexplicably infuriates you? This is the case (GAME) that I have. Is it really difficult to add OPTION to take them off and put them on? I just think it's gross -_-

On the panties thing, post your opinion on it in the Steam feedback thread. I mentioned this as well and I've seen it requested by others as well to get the panties off the captain's head. Would be nice if they'd go that route. Maybe make it optional if some people still want it on.

I'm a bit late to the party, but 1 million is still considered indie. Sure, it's more than a lot of indie titles would normally have for a budget, but that's still chump change compared to what are considered AAA games. The AAA games tend to have a budget similar to blockbuster movies. Looking at some of the more expensive AAA games, I see some games that have a budget in the 200 million dollar range. I think I saw an article say that Cyberpunk was more than 300 million. With those kinds of numbers, 1 million seems like nothing. They'd burn through that in a month or less. Granted, that's because they have more people to throw at the problem.

Heh, with budgets like that though, you can probably see why AAA games tend to all be the same or do nothing but chase trends. Better to be safe than sorry. If they spend even, say, 50 million on a game, it better sell well enough to turn a profit. It could be the most moving, groundbreaking thing since sliced bread, but no profit means its a shit game in their eyes. That's why the indie scene is where you often see new ideas. Their motivation is different from the AAA scene. They may have a lower budget, but that just means they have less to lose. And with the indie scene able to make cheap alternatives, they need to stand out amongst their peers. To do that, they need to innovate. Now, that doesn't mean all indie games strive for innovation. Just like with AAA games, there is comfort in chasing trends and making tweaks on something that already works. Heck, the term shovelware exists for a reason.

Now, you can make an argument that Studio FOW mismanaged their budget and/or time, or didn't have as solid a groundwork as they claimed (I don't know, I haven't been following them all that closely), but 1 million is still pretty indie. It may be on the higher end, but that's still considered chump change. Anyway, moving on.

I personally don’t care either way for the panties-on-the-head thing, but as I understand it, the reason for the panties is because they don’t want to make a face for the protagonist. He’s literally a faceless protagonist. I assume it’s so that anyone can imagine themselves as the main character or something, I don't know. But it was a very conscious decision to cover the face.

As for me, I'm on the fence about the dialogue and stuff. On the one hand, I'd like it to be less...childish I guess is the word: juvenile. But at the same time, I laugh at some of those silly, juvenile jokes like the one in the latest Dev Diary where the guy talks about beating you to death with his testicles. 1656391664020.png
That line with that face, I'll admit, it gave me a chuckle. It all depends on the mood I'm in at the moment. Sometimes I just want a silly game. Other times, I'm in the mood for something with a more serious tone. The gameplay could use some work, sure, but I've played other games that were worse than this. And besides, that 1 million thing shouldn't even matter. You shouldn't be expected to like every game. What was I talking about again? I kinda just went off on tangents. Something about...oh yeah. You can say the devs were irresponsible with the money that was given to them, but I highly doubt that they were being malicious in this. It could very well be that Studio FOW bit off more than they could chew. Made too many promises and assumed their management when developing movies could transfer over to making a game. Plus with them starting development right at the start of Covid, them switching to a new engine (Unreal 5 I think), and other similar issues, the learning curve was likely very much underestimated. This by no means absolves them of any mismanagement, but...uh, where was I going with this? I forget, and it's already been a couple days since I started writing this. I'd better throw it out the door before I forget about it. Toodles

Basically.

Blender also has a much higher learning curve required to just even get into it compared to something like SFM, which is why theres still many animators using SFM even today, like Noname55. On one hand SFM crashes constantly, but Blender has its own trade off with taking forever to render simple scenes due to it being a resource hog.

I do want to note I wasn't trying to shit on HydraFX, Yeero, FPSBlyck, NYL, etc. I just wanted to point out that thier actual animations aren't actually that good animation wise. Its mostly lighting and texture work. Impressive lighting and texture work, but mostly that.
I know this is an old post but I just can't stand such gibberish

Software used has nothing to do with the quality of animation, textures and to some extent lighting even (you can fuck up lighting in Blender too). The only reason some animations are better and some are worse is because different artists spend different amount of time working on single animations, some will do more animations but the quality of animation might be worse, some will put in more effort but this will result in less animations, obviously they make it for money and fans want content, so most favor simpler animations over complex ones to release more videos, they still deliver quality video due to high quality of models, textures, lighting but animations may be done simpler.

Personally I don't like work of some of those Blender artists, a lot of of their animations are quite boring and simple indeed, but I never liked Studio FOWs animations that much either, they aren't bad and they do have a lot going on but quite often because it was done in SFM the animations seem rough, unfinished, most Blender artists have better control over animtion in it so theirs usually fees more fluid and realistic. Still there are some amazing guys that animate really well in both Blender and in SFM, some guys even manage to make SFM look good (rare but happens).

Textures can look good in SFM, it's down to models.

Blender is not a resource hog, it's a 3D package that does path tracing which is demanding and takes time, SFM is a game engine tool based on ancient video game engine, obviously it runs fast. Also Blender now has Eevee real time engine that far exceeds SFM's Source Engine capabilities and delivers high quality while taking a fraction of the time needed compared to Path tracing renderer.

Excellent post. I'd like to add something if it's relevant. As a former patron of Studio FoW I remember a time, before their last movie production was released (not counting Scarlet Nights) when Darkcrow and others made mention that they were going to start dabbling with a new engine that could perform better than Source FilmMaker. From that time until they officially started work on Subverse they had adequate time to start learning how to use Blender and/or the Unreal Engine.

I'll just throw my two cents in here for what it's worth:

the game is ok in terms of gameplay, I'd even say it's pretty good, you have two main modes that are different offering some variety, the problem with it is that it's so fucking stale, there are just a handful of upgrades, and they're basically worthless, 5% more damage oh how exciting, I'd like to see the devs allowing us to absolutely break the fk out of the progression because after 20 planets of shooting it gets kinda fucking boring, the ground combat is a bit more appealing to me <IDK why because I absolutely despise turn based stuff> and the addition of new monster is kinda cool and a lot more interesting that 10 % more shield capacity

in terms of dialog tho I fking hate it, I just hate the writing, IDK why it just doesn't work for me, the animations are great ofc, but it feels like it takes for frigging ever if you want to collect them, that's why I just use cheat engine to get more points, it's not like you don't have enough planets, especially with the new updates there might be more planets in this game then there are stars in the sky, just thinking about how much space combat you'd have to do makes me wanna OD on some antidepressants , but every time a character opens their mouth and says something I just wanna die inside

TLDR: good mechanics, bad design, good porn

edit: and to the people complaining that it takes too much between updates, you show me a game on this website that has regular updates at short intervals, plus whenever we had updates < except maybe the last one> we got a ton of content, usually a new character with a new chapter of story with some scenes and with extra scenes for old characters, I "feel" like a lot of H games in development will have a update focusing on one character and then no more content for them, ever, like they are forgotten, but this one does it really well by just adding some more scenes in Pandora, that's all it takes, not necessarily more story or writing but more of the good stuff

Don’t think that’s a great example, given the first post is dated in 2017. Despite the years of Patreon income, they also tried a kickstarter earlier this year and didn’t even make half the goal from what I remember.

For consistency I’d probably put up NLT as a decent dev time-wise.
I don't see the relevancy of the first post date, same with the failed kickstarter. It's not as if people were going to pay on Patreon AND kickstarter
also, yea, compare NLT (which as far as I can tell from a search on F95, is just another crappy VN creator) to the WL devs...lol
not even in the same realm of complexity

I'm stuck at combat tutorial battle and I can't do anything in this point. Lily's ultimate is not raised. No E button for movement, no Q button for atack, Restarting the battle don't help. What I can do here? Nothing works...

Interesting concept. (y)
Thanks for upload.
Little afraid of the data size, but I will give it a chance. I am attracted by the combination of the mechs.

is there a cheat/save file that I can get unlimited points/all scenes?

edit: I was horny enough to scroll through posts to find a guy sharing a save file at #6,892....works for me on 0.4.5 version
