The only problem is you want the game to be something it isn't. So yeah then we have players that think it's bad, just like I think games such as COD, Fortnite etc is complete trash. You are left with if you like something or you don't.Thats kind of the problembub"bob"
You may continue to not understand what a linear sandbox is, but the rest of us don't have such a handicap. Choice decisions effect the journey along a main plotline. If the game was competently designed with mechanics and narrative working synergistically you would have material choice within the fixed narrative.
Lily won't not fuck mantics? Thats a dealbreaker?
>kick her from the ship
>can't field mantics
>can't use her altfire
>field yourself and the other crew members to get the full roster of field combatants
>shows up with Fortune on holo when there is a plot reason she needs to be on screen
Killi won't not not fuck mantics? Thats a dealbreaker? Won't put up with the optional midgame companion quest that'd get her to fuck Mantics?
>kick her from the ship
>lose her alt fire
>lose her field unit
>you've made an enemy for life.jpg and if you need to go to her hat in hand later it'll require a quest or argument.
etc. etc. right down the game design.
Applies for almost every design "decision" of subverse; reverse it to get the roadmap for making a real game.
Things like crewmembers, the relationships you forge with them, the missions you take, the results of sidestory quest missions with Dim Fool, etc. should be or contain choice decisions.
Without it the combat playloop is just padding runtime with minigames. Without it this isn't a game, it's just a visual novel. And not just a visual novel, a rudimentary one at that. The lowest of rent pure VNs at least put the illusion of choice somewhere, a bar subverse didn't reach even once in 6 chapters.
This many months and the hill you die on isn't that the game is good. The hill you die on is that it's bad but you don't care. Holding it up as maybe only as bad as the latest .0000000000000001a gobbo abomination on design and mechanics. That's what $2,000,000 bought.

You have choice decisions. What waifus you want to unlock scenes with and in what order. That is based on your choice. You have choices in the game, but they are limited to the games mechanics.
