Wish more games like this would have code released so the public could pick them up.
Such a solid game with a great story.
Come back to this one every year or so.

Bro, every single HTML/Twine game has the code right there. It's HTML, just edit the file in notepad. Fuck, you can even edit it with the browser's dev mode (F12) while playing. For this game, I usually add a 12 hour nap button to skip the day. You can do more than 12, but the game gets kinda fucky if you don't manually sleep so the "sleep" passage can do its thing to set up the next day. And I usually boost the perversion gains by around 2x (by just editing the file with search/replace) so there's less grinding.

The difference is someone officially picking it up and continuing the project vs me screwing around on my own. Would be nice if they just came out and said, "This project is officially abandoned. Here's my source code. If you'd like to officially pick it up just DM me and I'll work with you to hand it over."
And I almost never play a Twine game without editing the variables while I'm playing. Nothing like just giving yourself a few hundred thousand of whatever currency the game has, or ramping up other stats, etc. =p Sugarcube.state.variables for the win.

Again, the source code is the HTML file. You can bring that into the Twine editor and work from there, or edit the file in a text editor like most devs do. Nothing is obfuscated.
Obviously there's some difference if they're using something like Tweego which takes multiple individual files for passages and compiles them into a single one, but for the most part it's still workable.
Only thing you're really missing is whatever progress the dev did on a newer version, but sometimes those are still in the code as unimplemented passages.

The only real difference between you screwing around with the code and someone picking it up to work on is how much time you want to invest into adding to it.

I think everyone is missing my point... I'm not saying I can't, or don't know how, etc, to add content on my own. What I'm saying is it would be nice if, when a project gets abandoned, the owner of the content comes out and officially says "my content is now free for anyone to pick up and take on as their own." I can't just grab someone else's game and start modifying it and release it as my own. That's not my source code. That's not my content. That is my whole point. I appreciate people weighing in with the "how to" of continuing a game but my point isn't about the technical aspects--it's about the ownership aspects. Hopefully the advice you've all laid out helps someone else with adding content to games because they didn't know how, though. Solid information there. But that's not what I'm getting at.

You literally can as long as you don't monetize it. Singing karaoke isn't illegal even though you're just taking somebody else's work and doing what you want with it. Him giving you permission to use it would give you rights to make money from it, while you modding a project while explicitly saying it's not yours is you exercising your creative rights. The original dev can ask you to take it down if they think you're harming the reputation of their content because you're adding questionable things, but they can't sue you for something you're not making money from.

I think he is saying it more out of a respect thing.
You both touched on it.
A) Out of respect, I wouldn't want to pick up a project and run with it as if it were my own--even if I'm just adding content to keep it alive while paying homage to the original creator.
B) As Vanafaye alluded to, why would I put the time and effort into keeping a project alive just for the creator to come back and be able to make me take down my work...? Again, easily resolved if creators would (if they wanted to) just release the code or state that the code is able to be reused.
C) I'm not even sure why people keep responding. :D It was just a comment. It doesn't need to be a discussion. I'm saying I wish more folks who abandon projects would say anyone can use their content/code. Legality comes down to many different variables but typically, if a content creator says their content is free for reuse then there's no issue no matter where you live. Prime example of the nuances is that Denmark is looking into giving people trademark over their own appearance. Who knows what kind of interesting case law that would bring up or inspire other countries to do. Does this cover publicly accessible areas? Like if you're out in public, someone snaps a picture of you, and then wants to use it as b-roll do they need to hunt you down to get your permission? Can they train AI models with it? Who knows. :D Interesting times.
D) I'm not even sure this project is abandoned. It's 1.0. Maybe the dev just straight up moved on and called it finished...? Who knows? Definitely not me.

I appreciate folks adding the technical how-to, weighing in with different viewpoints, etc., but at the end of the day I'm just a random dude, in a porn game site, saying I wish creators would opensource their content when they abandon it. No more; no less. That's it. Hopefully people get whatever they can out of the discussion but I'm out. And I hope everyone enjoys the game as much as I have, and probably will continue to as I come back to it. Solid game.

What do you mean? You can just keep visiting him and use the helmet any time you want.
