I actually hate when movies, etc have bad endings. It's worse in games, especially when there's no reason to think choices will lead to it. Shouldn't have to use a walkthrough, unless it's a built in one maybe.

Generally, I don't like one-sided plots in books, movies or AVN. Especially when it's one-sidedly sweet. All this gives the impression of artificiality and lack of realism. I can't identify with this.
There's a whole spectrum between "one-sidedly sweet" and "outright cucked", with various levels of "tension" present all the way through that middle. The stakes can be high, mistakes can be made, but generally it's great when you the hero triumphs in the end after overcoming many obstacles. That's why we generally tell stories.

Scene 29.

I ended up adding a bit more material to the scene, something was bothering me, and I had to correct it. The definitive version of the scene is 10 312 words long. I did cut it and prepared it for posing. My cut contains 314 images. That's more than I planned but that will be ok.

I began the posing with some prep work.

In order to pose scene 29, I need 2 new characters who will make a very, very brief appearance. One of these two characters will come back on Day 7 for another scene and a more important role in the development of some members of the main cast.

I also need a "new set". The lower hallway, the part of the house that runs from the living room to the kitchen, with all its doors and access to the various sets. Basically, it's a mega set of the whole ground floor, including in full the entrance of the house and the laundry room. I will use that set very briefly in scene 29 but it will be very useful during the coming night.

I haven't started working on that yet. I will most likely get to it when I'll be 300 renders deep into the scene.

As always, the first image of the scene takes a lot of time to pose. The first image of scene 29 is no exception to that rule. It is ready however and the posing can now really begin.

In the end, that was one of these weird weeks during which I had to work on many different things for very little global progress. It's a bit frustrating, but like laying the foundations of a house, it is necessary work.

Hopefully, next week will feel more productive.

The quick sum up :

  • Day 6 Part 5 will contain 2 new scenes: scenes 28 and 29.
  • Day 6 Part 5 will contain 1 reworked scene: Day 2, scene 2.
  • Day 6 scene 28 has been written, posed, and is mostly rendered.
  • Day 6 scene 29 has been written.
  • 15 785 words of new content so far.
  • 495 shots are planned, 186 are posed, and 177 are rendered.
  • I'm currently posing scene 29.

Dev Update #258
ep1_sc4_008.jpg Not much to say this week. I progressed on the posing and reached shot #52. I didn't encounter any difficulties so far. There is a surprising amount of movement for a simple "conversation" scene, which takes some time to pose, but nothing problematic so far. There is a lot of "contact" to pose in the coming shots, however, and that will be more complex to handle.

I began rendering the scene. Light and noise look ok to me. I'm not really surprised, as the scene takes place almost entirely in the same setting as scene 28, and I didn't have any major light issues while rendering it.

I hope to be able to progress a bit faster next week.

  • Day 6 scene 29 has been written and is currently being posed.
  • 15 785 words of new content so far.
  • 496 shots are planned, 234 are posed, and 190 are rendered.
  • I'm currently posing scene 29.

Dev Update #259

Scene 29.

I'm still posing it, of course.

I didn't progress as much as I hoped. I've reached shot #83. However, I didn't just pose only 30 shots. I had to rewrite a part of the script. A small 150-word-long part I realized wasn't great, to say the least. I rewrote it into something better with some variations depending on the path you're in. The 150 words transformed into 500 and 5 shots had to transform into a dozen.

As always the shots I add in those edits are not accounted for in the render count I indicate on the Trello or the quick sum up. As I don't want to renumber every shot I have planned in my storyboard. So... long story short, I posed more shots than it seems, and I'm too lazy to edit the numbering of my storyboard to show it.

I also had to create some screens to display on the characters' smartphones. The UI I created, in the last few updates is far from realistic, but I believe it's simple and intuitive enough to be understood. I had to create only a couple of images but it took me a surprising amount of time. The challenge is always to find an element that can clearly indicate the event I want to show and focus on that, simplifying it to the extreme while keeping it understandable.

As always I probably ask myself too many questions when I work on that kind of stuff. These are just details that probably no one cares about. I shouldn't spend so much time on it.

Steam.

The number of wishlists is increasing very, very slowly. I've been told that it can be very difficult and slow at the beginning and increase way faster later on. So I'm not panicking, yet, but it's kind of worrying. I contacted a bunch of curators and sent them invitations to review the game. I hope their recommendations will help.

  • Day 6 scene 29 has been written and is currently being posed.
  • 16 127 words of new content so far.
  • 496 shots are planned, 265 are posed, and 199 are rendered.
  • I'm currently posing scene 29.

Dev Update #261

Scene 29.

Some good progress this week. Having reached shot #176 we have passed the 55 % threshold and the first segment is behind us. There are about 45 shots left in Segment 2. I should be able to finish it next week. The previews are a bit noisy. I'll have to pump the iterations a bit higher to solve this.

Steam.

Some more curators have been contacted, some more reviews have been written, and it helped. We have reached 2600 wishlists.

I asked some questions and did some research. If I understood correctly, there seem to be three major milestones, in terms of wishlist.

At around 4 000 wishlists, the Steam algorithm should start to randomly display the game in the discovery queues and the "more like this" sections. Apparently, that is the real start of the Steam journey. If we don't reach that level, we are doomed. Reaching it, however, won't be enough to do well.

The "popular upcoming" sections seem to unlock at around 12 000 wishlists and that seems to be what is required for a game to really step out of confidentiality and sell on the platform as the game could then be displayed on the front page of the store (providing that the user has allowed adult game to be displayed, of course).

Consistent and regular presence across the whole store seems to really happen somewhere between 25 000 and 50 000 wishlists.

So... we haven't yet reached the first milestone, and I don't think that Summer Scent can reach the third one. But numbers can improve way faster if we reach the first step, and that 12k wishlist before launch could still be possible. There is still hope.

  • Day 6 scene 29 has been written and is currently being posed.
  • 16 184 words of new content so far.
  • 496 shots are planned, 358 are posed, and 217 are rendered.
  • I'm currently posing scene 29.

Hi, I'm really enjoying the game so far, I think it has the most branches of anything I've played. I actually normally dislike branches, but I think they're handled really well in this game and I've liked it.

I have a question though: How do you unlock the "don't worry about that" option when coming across Cassie skinny dipping in the pool on the night of day 3? Every playthrough I've done, the only thing I can pick is "turn around," and the best walkthrough I can find online never mentions the option.

Help ... I keep missing the "choose none" choosenone variable, can someone tell me where it comes from?
It says its in Ep4, but I've been back to end of day 3, and don't see anything until I get the red.

edit found it ... if you go to meet Kelly in the coffeee shop you don't see the option for it. It's a question from Eve when visiting Cassie's house to collect clothes.

Scene 29.

Segment 2 is posed, I'm now working on segment 3 and the last hundred shots of the scene. I do not foresee any difficulties aside from the sheer size of the files and the time required to load them. I have 4 characters in the scene at the moment and will go up to 7 for about half of the hundred shots to come. This means 20 minutes + to load a file which represents an enormous and frustrating waste of time. I can already feel the pain.

I progressed on the rendering. So far, the results look rather good to me.

I think I have two more weeks of posing before I'm done with Scene 29. I'll then take a break to work on the code before reworking Day 2 Scene 2, which should be a walk in the park, in terms of size, compared to Scene 29.

  • Day 6 scene 29 has been written and is currently being posed.
  • 16 315 words of new content so far.
  • 496 shots are planned, 404 are posed, and 256 are rendered.
  • I'm currently posing scene 29.
